News Summary

Over 150 community members participated in a recent ‘Lunch and Learn’ event to discuss patient advocacy in women’s health care. The event coincided with the local council’s approval of a new $1.4 million women’s health clinic aimed at addressing the need for comprehensive maternal care in the Texas Panhandle. Scheduled to open in mid-2025, the clinic will offer essential services, including screenings, counseling, and support for low-income women, fostering empowerment and improved health outcomes.

Exciting Developments in Women’s Health – Community Comes Together!

This week, more than 150 passionate individuals gathered at a stimulating “Lunch and Learn” event, hosted by the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health at Amarillo National Bank. The focus of the discussion was straightforward yet powerful—Patient Advocacy in Women’s Health Care. Speakers at the event stressed how vital it is for women to trust their own experiences and confidently advocate for their health needs. These are meaningful conversations that can inspire real change in health care practices!

A Day to Empower and Educate

Dr. Joanna Wilson, an internal medicine specialist and the founder of the Her Care clinic, was among the speakers who shared her insights. She highlighted an important cultural shift in medicine, where patients are now being regarded as valuable team members rather than mere recipients of care. This change is incredibly empowering for women who may have felt ignored or undervalued in past medical encounters.

Empowerment was a recurring theme of the day, with Julia Pierce, a passionate patient advocate, sharing her personal story of survival after a heart attack while pregnant. Her tale underlined the critical importance of having the audacity to speak up about one’s health. Events like this remind us that there is strength in “advocating for ourselves,” and that can lead to better health outcomes for everyone.

Angela Knapp Eggers, senior director at the institute, discussed how these Lunch and Learn sessions serve as a platform to address a variety of health-related topics every year. They tackle everything from emotional health to nutritional guidance. Women leave these events with new knowledge and renewed confidence in their ability to take charge of their health. Mark your calendars, because the next session is coming up on November 15 and will focus on handy health tips for navigating the holiday season!

Big News on New Women’s Health Clinic Coming Soon!

In a landmark decision, the local city council also approved a whopping $1.4 million investment to establish a brand-new women’s health clinic, set to open its doors in mid-2025. Located at 850 Martin Road, the clinic is designed to address a growing need for women’s health services in the Texas Panhandle, which has been lacking comprehensive maternal care.

It’s worth noting that only about five counties in the region currently offer full access to maternal health services. The future clinic will provide an impressive array of services, including mammogram referrals, HIV and cervical cancer screenings, and domestic violence counseling. But that’s not all! It will also incorporate pre-prenatal care, covering essential services like STD testing, drug screenings, as well as providing mental health support to help women through their journeys.

The clinic aims to go beyond just medical services. For low-income women, it plans to offer vital hygiene items, cribs, car seats, and even transportation assistance—because we know that life can get complicated! Shockingly, 64% of women in the area struggle to afford menstrual hygiene products. This new clinic will help bridge that gap, ensuring that all women have what they need for their health.

A Bright Future Ahead

The funding for this life-changing Women’s Health Clinic has already received significant backing with a total project budget of $1.39 million. With enthusiastic support from council members, this initiative has been recognized for its potential to create a positive ripple effect in community health. Leading figures in the council have described the project as being very much in line with the city’s health priorities.

Plans are in place for six exam rooms to serve patients, as this exciting project gears up for opening day in early to mid-2025. This vibrant mix of community involvement and investment is paving the way for a better and healthier tomorrow for women in the region!
