Westland Set to Host Blues Legend Henry “Coco” Montoya This Weekend

Westland Welcomes Musical Master Henry “Coco” Montoya!

This weekend, music lovers in Westland are in for a real treat as the legendary Henry “Coco” Montoya takes the stage! At the vibrant age of 73, this seasoned musician is bringing his decades of experience and passion for blues to the Token Lounge on Saturday, November 30, at 8 p.m. Get ready for a night filled with mesmerizing tunes and heartfelt stories!

From Drummer to Guitar Virtuoso

Coco’s journey in music began nearly 50 years ago when he hit the road as a drummer with the iconic Albert Collins. Fast forward to today, and Montoya has certainly carved out his own path as a southpaw guitarist known for his electric performances. During a recent phone chat while on tour, Montoya shared some fascinating insights about aging and creativity in the music world. “As you get older and realize you don’t have anything to prove, really, you realize you were working way too hard when you were younger,” he explained with a chuckle.

An Evolving Artist

Montoya’s evolution as an artist is evident in his latest work, “Writing on the Wall.” This album was recorded with his talented touring band, including keyboardist Jeff Paris, who produced the album in his cozy home studio. The collection features covers, including a rendition of Lonnie Mack’s classic “Stop,” and exciting duets with his touring partner Ronnie Baker Brooks.

While on tour, Montoya has also been revisiting some of his classic hits. “When you go back and revisit a song you haven’t played in many years … it takes you back,” he said. “The perspective is different. The maturity is different. Just from getting older and playing differently, it really makes the songs brand new to you, which is great.” Sounds like a journey of rediscovery, doesn’t it?
