Imagine spending more than three decades touring, creating music, and making a name for yourself in the world of rap. Violent J from the highly recognized Detroit-based rap duo Insane Clown Posse has had such a life and is preparing to share his stories. The rapper is rolling out a live show known as “Story Time with Violent J” on Wednesday at Token Lounge in Westland.
However, folks expecting a stand-up comedy style performance might be in for a surprise. Speaking off-stage, Violent J clarified, “I’m just telling fresh stories, and stories that really made me happy and stood out in my life.” Despite the name, the emphasis isn’t on making people laugh but sharing real-life experiences and the comical situations that came with them.
The unconventional storytelling session is about more than just entertainment. Violent J’s stories revolve around his experiences as an outsider in the music industry, adding a sense of depth and authenticity to them. “None of these stories mean anything until you understand I am not one of them,” he says, sharing little insight into what you’d hear if you managed to catch the show. The rapper is also keen to give his audience a glimpse into his unique worldview, cultivated from his often quirky interactions with others.
Juggling the stage with Violent J will be two well-known names: Ouija Macc, an artist from ICP’s own Psychopathic Records, and former pro wrestler turned podcaster Colt Cabana. The two will function as guides or prompters who will help J navigate his narratives.
Inspired by veteran pro-wrestlers like Mick Foley, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, and the Undertaker, Violent J strives to translate their on-stage experiences into a live show and connect more intimately with the audience. The rapper tested this format during the COVID-19 lockdown with spoken-word performances, which he hosted in his Oakland County residence.
The Token Lounge show marks the beginning of a four-city tour including stops in Columbus, Joliet, and Indianapolis. While the previous shows have crossed their planned duration, J has assured a time limit for upcoming performances.
As for future projects, Violent J has listed out ambitious plans, which include the 24th annual Gathering of the Juggalos festival scheduled in Thornville, Ohio in August. The rap star is also behind an upcoming weekly pro-wrestling show titled “JCW Lunacy.” The group’s new album is also in the works and will be potentially released in 2024.
“Story Time with Violent J” is set to kick off at 7 pm on Wednesday at the Token Lounge. Make sure to grab this unique opportunity to hear a mix of humor, introspection, and unfiltered anecdotes from an industry icon.
