Honoring Our Heroes: Veterans Day Events in Southfield and Surrounding Areas

As we approach Veterans Day, the city of Southfield is gearing up for a heartfelt celebration to honor those who have bravely served in the United States Armed Forces. This year’s Veterans Day Ceremony will take place on Friday, November 8, at 11 a.m. in the Council Chambers located at 26000 Evergreen Road. The Southfield Veterans Commission is reaching out to residents of both Southfield and Lathrup Village who have served, inviting them to be recognized during this meaningful event.

How to Be Recognized

If you’re a veteran or know one who would like to be honored, the process is simple! Send an email to communityrelations@cityofsouthfield.com with your name, branch of service, rank, and any accolades you’d like to share. Don’t forget, all submissions must be received by Monday, November 4 to be included in the ceremony.

“The Veterans Day Ceremony is a significant event for our community,” said Rodney Caruthers, chairperson of the Southfield Veterans Commission. “It’s a time for us to come together and show our gratitude to all those who have risked their lives protecting our freedoms. We encourage everyone to join us in honoring these heroes.”

The Southfield Veterans Commission warmly invites all community members to participate in this special occasion. It’s a chance to show our appreciation and respect for the sacrifices made by our veterans. More Veterans Day Activities in the Area

But that’s not all happening this Veterans Day! Oakland County is also showing its support through Operation Greenlight. Starting at 5 p.m. on November 9, the Oakland County Circuit Court Building will be illuminated in green, a symbol of appreciation for our veterans. This vibrant display will remain lit overnight until dawn on November 13.

Local Luncheon and Celebrations

In more local news, the Independence Township Senior Center is hosting a complimentary Veterans Day luncheon for local veterans and their spouses on Friday, November 8. This event will start at 11:30 a.m. at 8047 Ortonville Road. It’s free for veterans and their spouses, though additional meals can be purchased for $7. Remember to pre-register by November 1 by calling 248-625-8231.

Meanwhile, the Veteran’s Ministry at LakePoint Community Church is hosting a free annual dinner on Saturday, November 9, at 4 p.m.. This event will take place at 1550 W. Drahner, Oxford and welcomes all veterans to bring a guest. Make sure to RSVP by calling 248-628-0038 as soon as possible!

More Events in the Community

Orion Township will also host a free veterans luncheon at noon on November 11, at the Orion Senior Center, located at 1335 Joslyn Road. Each veteran is welcome to bring one guest, but pre-registration is a must! Call 248-391-0304, ext. 3500 to reserve your spot.

Other notable events include the fourth annual Ruck Sack Walk at Bearss Fitness on November 9, where funds will be raised to aid veterans and families in need. Plus, on Veterans Day itself, a wreath will be placed at 1 p.m. at The Donald Kengerski Veterans Park in downtown Ortonville to honor all who have served.

The Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township is holding a special ceremony on Sunday, November 10, featuring speakers and refreshments. All are welcome to participate.

Finally, don’t miss the Farmington Hills Special Services Adults 50 & Better Division’s annual Veterans Day luncheon on November 11 at 11 a.m.. This year is particularly special as it marks the 28th year of this cherished tradition.
