In the heart of Novi, a community is still reeling from a shocking incident that took place during the Michigan State Fair. On August 31st, 2023, just before 10 p.m., a 14-year-old boy named Darean Davis tragically lost his life in a shooting that occurred in the parking lot outside the Suburban Collection Showcase.
Darean, a sophomore at University High School in Ferndale, was affectionately known to friends and family as DeeDee. He was remembered as a spirited and talented young man with a love for sports and a heart of gold. In a heartfelt tribute on social media, Dr. Devon Buskin, founder of the Detroit City Lions Youth Club, recalled the bright spirit that Darean brought into the lives of those around him. “DeeDee was a very vibrant, silly, and respectful young man,” he wrote, adding that he was a helpful presence in every team practice.
The shooting reportedly stemmed from an argument among the boys who had traveled together via Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills before continuing to Novi. While Darean tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching the hospital, another 14-year-old boy was also injured, suffering a gunshot wound to the right leg but fortunately remains in stable condition.
Law enforcement agencies, including Michigan State Police and Novi Police, swiftly responded to the scene. They deployed K9 units and even a helicopter to assist in the search for the suspect. However, despite their best efforts, the real culprit managed to evade capture that night. Officials reassured the community that there was “no threat to the community” following the incident.
Now, more than three months later, Darean’s killer remains at large. In a concerted effort to bring the suspect to justice, Crime Stoppers is offering a generous reward of $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest. The organization encourages anyone with knowledge of the shooting to reach out, reminding the community that tips can be submitted anonymously. “You can help make a difference,” they urge, encouraging citizens to call 1-800-Speak-Up or visit their website for more information.
The tragic loss of a young life has sparked conversations around community safety and the need to put an end to senseless gun violence. Dr. Buskin echoed that sentiment, urging everyone to come together in solidarity. “We have to be better examples for our children,” he passionately stated. “They are crying out for our help, and we need to answer!”
In response to the shooting, the Michigan State Fair has implemented enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of attendees. These changes include weapons detection systems, increased police presence, and an earlier closing time for the fair. The fair reopened the following day, reflecting the community’s resilience and resolve to move forward despite the tragic events.
The Novi community continues to mourn the loss of DeeDee and stands united in the fight against violence. Every life lost is a reminder of the urgent need for change, and the hope remains that justice will soon prevail for Darean and his family.
As this case unfolds, the call for information echoes throughout Novi. With the community’s help, perhaps we can bring an end to this heartbreaking chapter and ensure a safer future for all.
