Michigan — A 37-year-old female backpacker tragically died following a sudden medical emergency during a hike in a remote location of Isle Royale National Park, Michigan, as stated by authorities.
While hiking with her partner around Lake LeSage within Isle Royale National Park on Monday, August 12, the woman experienced an unexpected onset of medical complications. As reported by the National Park Service (NPS), her condition rapidly deteriorated, resulting in her inability to walk, loss of consciousness, and cessation of breathing.
Despite the best efforts of bystanders performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the woman could not be revived and consequently passed away.
Notably, Michigan State Police were contacted about the emergency situation via a “delayed 911 text” – a contact method made by the other backpackers present in the vicinity. Promptly, park rangers and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) were dispatched to the scene.
However, due to the remoteness of the location, the emergency response team was compelled to remain with the group overnight. By the morning of Tuesday, August 13, the staff of Isle Royale National Park had managed to safely transport the deceased woman and the rest of the party off the island.
One of the treasures of Michigan, Isle Royale National Park is nestled in a secluded area of northern Lake Superior. According to the National Park Service (NPS), the park effectively “preserves and protects the natural, cultural, and wilderness resources of a Lake Superior freshwater archipelago.”
An ongoing investigation into the cause of the woman’s tragic demise is being conducted by the Park Service. However, the exact cause of the woman’s death has not been revealed as of this time.
“The Isle Royale community extends their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” stated the NPS, extending their deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and friends of the hiker.
