Detroit – In a significant turn of events, authorities have announced that three teenagers have been charged in connection with the tragic murder of Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Brad Reckling. The news was made public during a press conference held on Wednesday morning, with key figures including Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, Detroit Police Chief James White, and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in attendance.
The nightmare began late on the night of June 22, when Deputy Reckling was working undercover, pursuing a stolen vehicle. Unfortunately, while tracking the vehicle, he became a victim himself when a suspect emerged and opened fire, hitting him multiple times. Heartbreakingly, Reckling was not wearing a bulletproof vest at the time, and the attack resulted in his untimely death.
Among the charged individuals is 18-year-old Ramon DeBose from Clinton Township, who is accused of being the one who pulled the trigger. He faces an extensive list of charges, including one count of murder of a peace officer, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of felony firearm, one count of carjacking, and one count of conducting a criminal enterprise.
Co-defendants, 18-year-old Karim Moore, also from Clinton Township, and Marquis Goins, from Detroit, are similarly facing severe charges. Each is charged with one count of accessory after the fact, receiving and concealing stolen property, four counts of carrying a concealed weapon, three counts of felony firearm, one count of carjacking, and one count of conducting a criminal enterprise.
According to the prosecutors, DeBose and his accomplices were operating as part of a criminal enterprise, which began in November 2023. Their actions allegedly resulted in multiple crimes, including at least four carjackings and four car thefts, alongside various weapons charges. This troubling pattern came to a head on the night Deputy Reckling was killed.
Prosecutors revealed that DeBose was the individual who fired the shots that took Deputy Reckling’s life. Meanwhile, Moore and Goins were said to have been in the getaway car, helping DeBose evade capture following the shooting. Moore, previously charged in this case, has faced accusations of lying to police during the investigation and resisting arrest.
During the press conference, Prosecutor Kym Worthy acknowledged the difficulty of the past four months for everyone involved, emphasizing that the legal team took the necessary time to ensure that the investigation was thorough and accurate. “I’m sure four months was very difficult to wait for, but we wanted to do this right,” she stated, reflecting the tireless efforts of the public integrity unit that painstakingly worked on this case.
Deputy Reckling’s death sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an outpouring of grief and support for his family. The deputy was honored in various memorial services and public gatherings, celebrating his dedication to keeping the community safe and serving as a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face daily.
This case highlights the ongoing struggle against crime and violence in many urban neighborhoods and serves as a call to action for the community to unite against such tragic incidents. As the legal proceedings continue, many will be watching closely to see how justice is served for Deputy Brad Reckling and his loved ones.
