Sponsor Our ArticlesLyon Township is set to see some changes soon as the Spaulding Bridge prepares for a significant closure. Mark your calendars because on November 18, this bridge will no longer be open for traffic due to its deteriorating condition. It looks like the bridge, which spans the Novi-Lyon Drain, is in need of some serious TLC! This closure is part of a proactive safety measure initiated by the Road Commission for Oakland County.
The Spaulding Road bridge is a vital link for about 370 vehicles each day, making it a well-traveled path. Unfortunately, the bridge’s condition has raised some red flags. While it isn’t on the brink of collapse just yet, officials are prioritizing caution and safety above all else. Dennis Kolar, managing director of the road commission, stressed this point, stating, “While these bridges are not at risk of immediately collapsing, in an abundance of caution, we opted to close both now rather than risk motorists driving on them as they continue to deteriorate.”
This proactive approach to maintenance and safety is commendable, but it definitely poses some challenges for those who rely on this route for their daily commute.
So, how will you get around this inconvenience? Well, it’s time to familiarize yourself with the detour route! Drivers will need to navigate the following series of turns:
This detour might seem a bit lengthy, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! It’s always good to plan your routes ahead of time to avoid any surprises.
Here’s a bit of good news for everyone. The road commission has already identified funding for the replacement of both the Spaulding Bridge and another bridge, the Emburke Boulevard Bridge in Waterford Township that also needs some serious work. Kolar indicated that while they are equipped to handle the financial side, there’s still a wait involved: “Unfortunately, we have to wait until the funding is available.”
It’s reassuring to know that this community is looking ahead and taking the necessary steps to ensure our roads remain safe and reliable.
While residents may experience some inconveniences in the upcoming months, the promise of a new bridge down the line should serve as a silver lining. Replacement construction is anticipated for next year, so there’s light at the end of the tunnel!
As the closure date approaches, staying informed will be key. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates from local officials regarding the reconstruction timelines and any additional measures to ease travel during this time.
For more localized information and updates regarding this and other road matters, residents can keep in touch with officials and community boards. After all, a well-informed community is a happy community!
