Exciting Changes Coming to Iowa City’s Business District
IOWA CITY — Big news is buzzing around the South of 6 Iowa City Business District! The community has warmly welcomed Maurice A. Davis as its new executive director, taking on a role that’s all about bringing new life to the Pepperwood Plaza area. This revitalization will be powered by a recently approved economic development tax, and there’s a lot to be excited about!
A Journey to Iowa City
Maurice’s story traces back to 2013 when he made the move to Iowa. Originally hailing from Illinois, he has worn many hats over the years. He’s worked as a financial adviser, run a marketing firm, and coordinated entrepreneurship programs at the Jane Boyd Community House. Not stopping there, Maurice has dabbled in podcasting and even authored a children’s book about entrepreneurship. Talk about versatility!
Before heading to Iowa, Maurice served in the National Guard in a combat arms position, but after a medical discharge, he sought new opportunities. His initial aim was to tap into law enforcement, motivated by the Corridor area’s numerous penitentiaries. But life had different plans for him, leading him on a path to entrepreneurship and community development.
New Beginnings with South of 6
Taking on this new role comes at a crucial time. His predecessor, Angie Jordan, stepped away in May due to health issues, having led numerous projects that aimed to uplift local businesses. The organization Maurice now leads operates under a self-supported municipal improvement district (SSMID), which was established to revitalize and support entrepreneurs in the area. The efforts began back in 2022, aiming to enhance the area between Broadway and Keokuk streets.
As Maurice settles into the position, he is clear about his mission: creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors and residents while providing much-needed support to local businesses. In his words, “My power is more bringing people together, helping facilitate connections, resources, and conversations.” Sounds like a fantastic way to foster growth!
Focus on Community and Collaboration
Though he’s only been on the job for about a month, Maurice is already keen on how he can effectively manage resources to ensure that projects and initiatives thrive. With his background in marketing, he brings a fresh perspective that focuses on strategic development rather than just the flashy side of marketing. “A lot of times when people think marketing, they think social media or making commercials. It’s more about research and understanding how to align our long-term vision,” he explained passionately.
Currently, Maurice resides in Cedar Rapids but has an open heart toward relocating to Iowa City if the right opportunity arises. His educational journey includes a bachelor’s degree in finance from Upper Iowa University and a master’s in business administration from Capella University, showcasing his commitment to continual growth.
A Open Invitation to the Community
To kick-start his new role, Maurice is eager to connect with the community. He’s inviting everyone to meet him at the South District Market on Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. It’s a fantastic chance for community members to share their ideas, concerns, and visions for the area while getting to know the new director first-hand.
As Maurice steps into this pivotal role, the community of Iowa City is buzzing with optimism about the fresh ideas and initiatives heading their way. Here’s to a brighter future for the South of 6 Iowa City Business District!
