Sponsor Our ArticlesMarch is recognized as Social Work Month, honoring the crucial contributions of social workers in our communities. With the 2023 theme ‘Compassion + Action,’ the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) emphasizes advocacy and resource support offered by these dedicated professionals. This year, initiatives like the Osceola Council on Aging’s internship program highlight the importance of emerging social workers who are pivotal in addressing community challenges. As the demand for social work grows, this month serves as a reminder of their integral role in society.
Each year, the month of March brings with it a special celebration that shines a light on the vital role of social workers in our communities. This year, the theme is Compassion + Action, as championed by the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). With a robust membership of 120,000, NASW works tirelessly to advocate for social workers across the nation, fortifying the profession with research and guidance.
So, what exactly do social workers do? Well, they’re the dedicated individuals you might find in a variety of community settings—schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, senior centers, prisons, and government agencies, just to name a few. These professionals step into difficult situations, quickly assessing needs and advocating for resources for individuals battling health issues, unemployment, and myriad social challenges.
Social workers don’t just stop at individual support; they also play an essential role in assisting families experiencing disabilities, domestic disputes, and other conflicts. They often serve as a crucial interim support system, bridging gaps that can make all the difference in a family’s life during tough times.
In the United States, social work is a growing field. As of 2022, there were over 725,000 social work jobs available, and the demand is expected to climb 9% through the year 2031. As more people recognize the invaluable impact of social workers, this profession is blossoming.
The Osceola Council on Aging (OCOA) is one organization that deeply understands the significance of social work. With a team of five dedicated social workers, OCOA embraces social work as a core component of its operations. To further support this mission, they run an exciting internship program aimed at college students eager to delve into the social work field.
At the moment, OCOA is home to six passionate interns who hail from the University of Central Florida and Barry University. Since the inception of this internship program in 2018, they have welcomed over 25 interns from other universities, including Florida State University, North Central University, and Arizona State University. This initiative not only creates learning opportunities for budding social workers but also strengthens the community through emerging talent.
Dr. Johnola Morales, the Chief of Staff and Senior Vice-President of Case Management and Home Care at OCOA, oversees this impactful internship program. She is driven by a passion for advocacy and has a rich experience in education, ensuring that the next generation of social workers is well-prepared to tackle real-world challenges. Inspired by her mother who also worked in healthcare, Dr. Morales remains committed to educating and nurturing emerging talent in the field.
Interns at OCOA get hands-on experience that teaches them about community advocacy, social service initiatives, and the intricate funding processes that assist clients in improving their overall well-being. This practical training is crucial as it equips them with the skills they need to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.
At OCOA, the social work team embodies the theme of Compassion + Action. They connect with community members who are in dire need of support, actively working to transform lives for the better. The Council’s mission is clear: to foster a healthier, safer, and more stable community. Through their commitment and the dedication of their interns, they pave the way for a brighter future for those they serve.
Social Work Month reminds us all of the integral role social workers play in weaving the very fabric of our communities—a role that is deserving of our appreciation, respect, and support.
