Novi — It was an exciting day in the city as the annual “Shop with a Hero” event brought smiles and joy to local children on December 14. This heartwarming initiative paired members of the Novi Police and Fire Departments with 14 underprivileged youth from the Novi Youth Assistance program, giving them the chance to pick out clothing and necessities during a shopping spree at Kohl’s.
Novi police officer Adam McGee even came in on his day off to help little Calvin Stewart, age five, find some new threads. As the evening unfolded, it was clear that this was more than just a shopping trip; it was a chance to build connections and foster good vibes between the community and those who protect it. “It’s good to see things in a different light. Usually, no one is excited to see us,” said Officer Reed Ladd, who had just completed a night shift before the event.
A Chance to Shine
For many kids, like Sophia Rowland, age 13, the moment was nothing short of magical. “I can get everything I want! They gave me money. That’s what I like,” she exclaimed as she proudly held her new purchases. The kids were given a budget of $300 to spend, and with guidance from their officer or firefighter partners, they were able to shop for essential items such as clothes, shoes, toiletries, and even cozy blankets.
The event was facilitated by Commander Kristie Gruenwald and Detective Julie Warren, who helped ensure everything ran smoothly. According to Sabrina Matsil, a caseworker with the Novi Youth Assistance, many of the children were either recommended by their schools or selected based on their situations. “There are families out there who really need this support,” she said, emphasizing the ongoing struggle for many in the community.
Why It Matters
This year’s event had 14 participants, but the impact it made rippled far beyond that. Matsil noted that last year, the adopt-a-family program supported 127 families in need. She stated, “There’s definitely a need out there. It’s important to recognize that even in an affluent community like Novi, families still face financial struggles.”
The funds for “Shop with a Hero” were provided by the Novi Police and Fire Benevolent Association, ensuring that the event could bring joy to those who need it most. For kids like Autumn Gregory, the experience helped shift their views about police officers. After an unfortunate encounter with law enforcement in her past, she shared, “I used to think the police were all bad. This one-on-one connection with officers transformed the experience for many kids. Autumn appreciated having a female officer guiding her through the shopping trip, especially when it came to selecting some makeup — a skill she was eager to learn.

From brand-name clothing to trendy accessories, kids could pick out what they truly wanted, often with a new friend by their side. “Look at that smile; that’s why we do it,” said Carrie Reichley, a member of the Novi Youth Assistance team, as she watched Gio proudly push his cart filled with goodies.
Officer Tim Gielow, who shopped with one child keen on Legos, expressed how rewarding it felt to contribute positively to a child’s life. “It makes me feel safe” was the sweet sentiment shared by Brady Donaldson, age 11, who enjoyed the bond he formed while shopping with a firefighter.
Generosity in Action
Although the children had a generous budget, some exceeded their limits. However, many of the officers felt compelled to help, covering the extra costs themselves. “It’s nothing to us. It’s just the right thing to do,” said Officer Meyer, showcasing the spirit of giving that filled the store.
