In Birmingham, a troubling incident at Seaholm High School has caused quite a stir in the community. A student has been temporarily removed from school after their appearance in a group Snapchat post containing *antisemitic* language. The post reportedly referred to sending “the Jews back to the gas chambers,” which predictably sparked outrage among parents and school officials alike.
The situation came to light when a group of Seaholm parents brought it to the school’s administration’s attention that the school’s Homecoming game was scheduled for Rosh Hashana—one of the holiest days in the Jewish faith, which this year runs from the evening of October 2 to the evening of October 4. Following this realization, Seaholm’s administration wasted no time addressing the issue. As of September 20, the date for the Homecoming game was swiftly changed to October 18, while the dance remains on October 5.
Cortez Strickland, the Manager of Marketing and Communications for Birmingham Public Schools, clarified that it is the responsibility of individual school administrators to set Homecoming dates, indicating that the scheduling oversight was an unintentional error by Seaholm’s administration. Principal Michael Wicker has acknowledged the mistake and expressed his commitment to do better in the future.
“At Seaholm High School, we celebrate our diversity and encourage a culture of respect, compassion, and civility,” Wicker stated in a message to the Seaholm community. “We sincerely apologize for the recent Homecoming schedule changes, which have understandably caused concern, frustration, and inconvenience. Our decision to adjust the schedule is consistent with our core values and mission to honor and respect cherished religious holidays and observances.”
While the scheduling changes were swiftly managed, the district is treating the antisemitic Snapchat incident with utmost seriousness. Wicker emphasized that the *language used in this post is completely unacceptable.* Through an ongoing investigation involving local law enforcement, the district is looking deeply into the matter. The student responsible for the offensive statement has been removed from school while the investigation continues.
It’s important to note that, according to Strickland, only this particular student made the offensive comment, and some of the classmates did not agree with it at all. One student even responded to the post with “**** that’s mean,” indicating that not everyone in the group shared the same mindset.
Wicker reiterated that “at Seaholm, we do not tolerate intimidation, harassment, or bullying.” Reports of any such behavior will be thoroughly investigated, whether they occur on school grounds, on social media, or through text messages. This approach proves that the school is committed to a safe and respectful learning environment.
Superintendent Dr. Embekka Roberson mirrored Wicker’s sentiments, underscoring the seriousness with which the district takes hateful speech directed at any members of the community. “Recently, we became aware of a text message with hateful speech directed at members of the Jewish community,” Roberson said. “We know the importance of unity in our schools and communities, and we strive for inclusivity every day.”
The school district is taking this situation seriously and intends to use it as a teaching moment, not just for the involved student but for the entire school community. The messages are clear: *hateful speech has no place in schools*, and efforts will be made to reinforce this stance moving forward.
As the investigation unfolds, the community is urged to remember the importance of respect and understanding among their peers as they work together to foster a accepting environment in their schools.
