Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a surprising turn of events, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has suspended his independent presidential campaign and is now endorsing Donald Trump. Kennedy disclosed his decision at a public event in Phoenix, revealing that his continued presence in the race could potentially harm Trump’s prospects and aid Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris.
Following the public announcement, Kennedy later joined Trump at an Arizona rally. The news of Kennedy’s support seems to have excited the crowd, which was abuzz with “Bobby!” cheers. Kennedy emphasized important national issues such as free speech, the war in Ukraine, and what he framed as a “war on our children”, leading to his conclusive decision. He noted these reasons as his major drivers to exit the Democratic Party, run as an independent, and finally back Trump.
Nonetheless, Kennedy clarified that he does not plan on completely dropping out of the race. He encouraged his supporters to continue endorsing him in states where the election results will likely remain unaffected.
Kennedy’s strategy to wrap up his campaign influenced his decisions in key battleground states. He is aiming to withdraw his name from the ballot in Pennsylvania and Arizona, but due to election regulations, it might be too late for him to do the same in Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin.
As Kennedy took the stage amid stormy applause and the blare of the Foo Fighters, Trump introduced him as “a man who has been an incredible champion for so many of these values that we all share.” Trump praised Kennedy for “raising critical issues that have been too long ignored in this country.”
Surprisingly, Kennedy’s endorsement happened despite having accused Trump of betraying his followers in the past. Their alliance led to a public outcry, particularly from Kennedy’s own family. Five of Kennedy’s family members issued a statement reiterating their support for Harris and expressing disappointment at Kennedy’s endorsement for Trump, referring to it as “a sad ending to a sad story”.
Kennedy’s endorsement for Trump has stirred various reactions from the public. Some see his alliance as an indicator of the dwindling trust in the Democratic Party. Supporters, like 38-year-old Casey Westerman who initially planned to vote for Kennedy, are now affording their support to Trump based on Kennedy’s decision.
Evidence from recent polls suggests that if Kennedy remained in the race, he might have adversely affected Trump more than Harris. Republicans were more likely to have a favorable view of Kennedy and those with a positive impression were significantly more likely to also have a favorable view of Trump (52%) than Harris (37%).
