Novi, Michigan Mourns the Loss of Dr. Kenneth Edwin Murray
In a heartfelt turn of events, the community of Novi is saying goodbye to Dr. Kenneth Edwin Murray, a cherished physician and community leader, who passed away at the age of 92 at his home on March 16, 2025. Born on November 27, 1932, in Denton, Wisconsin, Ken, as he was fondly known, dedicated his life to the healing profession and made a remarkable impact on countless lives.
A Life Rooted in Family and Community
Growing up in Montfort, Wisconsin, Ken was raised by his loving parents, Earl and Elizabeth Murray. He had a close bond with his family, including his late sister, Eloise Ofstun, and brother, Frank Murray. It was in Montfort where he also found the love of his life, Irene Novinski. The couple tied the knot early on and happily spent 65 years together before Irene predeceased Ken in 2021.
Ken wasn’t just a devoted husband; he was also a proud father, leaving behind a legacy of love through his four children: Brian (Alison), Christopher (Cynthia), Lisa Charney, and Sara (Garth) Barbee. The apple of his eye were his ten grandchildren—Lauren Bonenfant, Alyssa Hurtado, Nicholas Charney, Anna Chum, Thomas Charney, Elisabeth Nachtman, Sonja Barbee, Clay Barbee, Emma Murray, and Jack Murray—along with five great-grandchildren: Paul Bonenfant, Emmett Chum, Andrea Hurtado, Teresa Bonenfant, and Everett Nachtman.
A Journey Through Medicine
Dr. Murray’s educational journey led him to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Pre-Med from the esteemed Beloit College in Wisconsin. His thirst for knowledge propelled him further to Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in Missouri, where he graduated with high honors. He then completed his residency at what was then called Lansing General Hospital, now McLaren Lansing.
For nearly four decades, Ken practiced general medicine alongside his trusted colleague, Dr. John T. O’Connor. His influence extended beyond the examination room as he served as Chief of Staff at Lansing General Hospital on two occasions and took a prominent role on the hospital’s Board of Trustees for six years.
A Commitment to Excellence
Ken was not only board-certified in general medicine but was also honored in 1996 with the Walter F. Patenge Medal of Public Service from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Known for his dedication to nurturing the next generation, he frequently mentored medical students, passing on his knowledge and passion for medicine.
Passions Outside of Medicine
Outside of his medical career, Ken was an avid golfer, achieving an impressive five hole-in-ones throughout his life. His passions didn’t stop there; he also loved gardening, hunting, and fishing, often enjoying these activities with his family and friends. Ken and Irene were active members of their church communities in Lansing and Okemos, participating in St. Casimir Catholic Church and St. Martha Catholic Church, respectively.
In 2017, the couple made the big move from Lansing to Novi, Michigan, to be closer to their family, a decision fueled by love and the desire to keep family ties strong.
