The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is bringing fresh energy to the ice as it gears up for its second season! After a thrilling inaugural season that began in January 2024, the league has officially announced that each of its six teams will sport brand-new custom jerseys, unique logos, and distinct team names. Let’s dive into what these changes mean for fans and players alike!
Last season, the six teams were solely represented by their city names and color schemes. While this approach served its purpose, it quickly became clear there was a strong demand for traditional team identities. Fans expressed their hope for something more familiar that they could rally behind, leading the league to take action.
Developed through a collaborative effort between PWHL’s VP of Marketing Kanan Bhatt-Shah and the New York design agency Flower Shop, the rebranding initiative sought to establish a deep connection between each team and its city. In just about three months, they settled on some truly compelling team names and logos. Here’s the breakdown:
What’s more fascinating is the thought process and research that went into developing these logos and branding elements. The design team drew inspiration from local architecture, seasonal changes, and significant cultural elements tied to each city. For instance, the Boston Fleet’s logo features a stylized “B” that resembles an anchor, reflecting its waterfront heritage. Likewise, Ottawa’s logo shines with an electrified red and yellow “C,” deeply resonating with the city’s spirit.
Fans might even notice hidden surprises, such as a blue “M” cleverly incorporated into the Montreal Victoire logo or a blocky “NY” hinting at the vibrancy of the New York Sirens’ identity. These clever design touches are a testament to the thoughtfulness behind each team’s branding.
In addition to the new logos and team names, fans can now snag their own piece of the action with newly launched team jerseys. Starting this Thursday, jerseys featuring team logos front and center and striking striping details will be available for purchase both online and in stores. Alternate colorways are also ready to cater to diverse preferences, allowing fans plenty of options to showcase their team pride.
It’s not just jerseys; the PWHL and Flower Shop have thought ahead to develop a variety of merchandise. Fans will have a wider selection available, ensuring you can rock your team’s gear no matter the event!
The push to establish distinctive team identities comes at a pivotal time for the PWHL. Having drawn nearly 400,000 fans across 72 games during its first season, including a world record of over 21,000 attendees at a women’s hockey game, the league is setting the stage for sustained growth and success.
