There is ongoing buzz in the political realm, late-night shows, and the social media landscape about Project 2025. A topic of fervent discussions, with mentions from public figures like late-night show host John Oliver, music sensation Lizzo, and renowned actor Taraji P. Henson. Understandably, many are seeking more detailed information about it, as evidenced by the soaring search rates on “Project 2025.”
In a nutshell, Project 2025 is a 920-page long policy proposal, painstakingly put together by the conservative Heritage Foundation. This proposal presents a bold, Christian-conservative vision for a future second term of former president Donald Trump, should he secure a win in the upcoming elections. This isn’t the first time the Heritage Foundation has released such a mandate; it has been a traditional practice since the 1980s, presenting these blueprints before incoming presidential administrations.
Within the pages of Project 2025, there are several radical changes proposed, including reconfiguring the FBI as a politically-biased entity, abolishing the Department of Education, and dismantling the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, charging it as a significant contributor to the ‘climate change alarm industry.’ Immigration policies would also witness a radical shift, disallowing U.S citizens from availing federal housing aid if they share their home with any non-citizen or non-permanent legal resident. Furthermore, it advocates for the termination of legal status for the collective group of close to 500,000 ‘Dreamer’ immigrants.
Although Trump has publicly dissociated himself from this project, stating that he has never seen it, nor is involved in its crafting, it’s noteworthy that at least 140 individuals who served during the Trump administration contributed to Project 2025. In a speech delivered at a Heritage Foundation dinner in 2022, Trump lauded the group’s efforts and hinted at its mastery in creating strategic plans for an imminent ‘colossal mandate to save America.’
Project 2025 delves deeply into matters related to gender, sexuality, and race, unveiling plans to dismantle most of the federal government’s initiatives to achieve equity. Consequently, these changes would affect the collection of data necessary for tracking outcomes across public and private sectors. The dismantling of the Gender Policy Council is suggested, with recommendations to eradicate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) schemes across the federal government, removing certain terminologies from all rules and regulations – such as ‘sexual orientation,’ ‘gender identity,’ ‘reproductive health,’ and ‘reproductive rights.’
The proposal presents a future with a federal government that negates the existence of transgender individuals, minimizes the rights of same-sex married couples, and dismantles services accessible to LGBTQ+ Americans wherever possible. The suggested changes predominantly target the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, proposed to be renamed as ‘Department of Life.’ Project 2025 seeks to adapt an official stance that hinges on a ‘biblically based’ definition of family, composed of a married father, mother, and children.
The future under such a policy blueprint seems grim for women and LGBTQ+ communities and has severe implications for reproductive rights, education, and employment dynamics. It emboldens the conservative ideology, pushing back years of hard-fought strides towards inclusivity, equality, and basic human rights.
