Pontiac, Michigan, is making waves as it rallies together to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. At the heart of this effort lies HAVEN, a vital organization that has been championing the cause for almost 50 years. Every day, HAVEN serves as a refuge for those in need, providing essential services to the community.
HAVEN stands out as the county’s only 24-hour emergency shelter dedicated to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, including their children. Each year, the organization reaches out to nearly 30,000 individuals, offering them shelter, counseling, advocacy, and educational programs. With the rising demand for these critical services, HAVEN has become a beacon of hope for countless individuals navigating challenging and often dangerous circumstances.
CEO Christine Kinal shares some eye-opening statistics: “It affects one-in-three Michiganders.” This statistic underscores the fact that domestic violence and sexual assault are not just issues elsewhere—they touch lives right here in our neighborhoods. Kinal also emphasizes that the stigma and secrecy surrounding these issues often prevent people from recognizing the signs in their own lives or the lives of those around them.
HAVEN offers an extensive range of services designed to meet the needs of survivors. From counseling and shelter to support with Personal Protection Orders and legal advocacy, the organization works tirelessly to ensure that victims receive the help they need to begin their journey to recovery. Also crucial are the prevention education programs aimed at raising awareness in the community.
“We’re serving victims of crime. Once they come through HAVEN, they’re survivors,” Kinal notes. This transition from victim to survivor is central to HAVEN’s mission. However, Kinal emphasizes, “If we can’t provide the basic needs, then we’re just not hitting the mark.” This acknowledgment of the basic needs is what has spurred the community into action.
To support survivors, a special “Go 4 It: Living Without Fear” event will be held on Tuesday, October 22. This initiative, in partnership with the local community, encourages residents to contribute essential items or donate through HAVEN’s Amazon Wish List. These donations will go directly to those staying at the shelter, helping them rebuild their lives in a supportive environment.
Not sure what to donate? Consider essential items like clothing, toiletries, or even household goods. Every little bit counts, and your contributions can significantly impact the lives of individuals and families experiencing hardship.
In addition to gathering donations, there’s an opportunity to recognize those in our community who are making a positive difference. By nominating someone who’s “Going 4 It” in their efforts to support victims and communities, you can help highlight the importance of compassion and dedication in tackling these tough issues. Each month, featured nominees will be celebrated, creating a network of support and gratitude.
The event is made possible by the generosity of local sponsors, including Masco, Henry Ford Health, and the Gilbert Family Foundation. By joining hands with these partners and the community, HAVEN seeks to bring lasting change to the lives of survivors.
In Pontiac, a sense of hope is blossoming. By shining a light on domestic violence and sexual assault, the community is not just raising awareness; it’s actively working to create a safer environment for everyone.
If you are in need of support, or know someone who is, remember that help is available. Michigan’s Domestic Violence Hotline is confidential and available 24/7. You can reach them by calling 866-864-2338 or texting 877-861-0222. Together, we can take steps towards healing and empowerment, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live without fear.
