Plymouth Township to Transform Former Pumpkin Patch into New Housing Development

Plymouth Township Welcomes New Housing Development

Plymouth Township is buzzing with excitement as a formerly cherished pumpkin patch is set to transform into a vibrant community of new homes. This past December, the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees approved the Cresthaven cluster housing project, bringing a fresh face to a beloved piece of land that was once the domain of the renowned Farmer Jay.

What’s Cooking in the Cresthaven Project?

Spanning a cozy 6.5 acres, the development will rise on the west side of Canton Center Road, nestled conveniently between Joy Road and Ann Arbor Road. Future residents can look forward to a mix of stunning two-story colonial homes and practical ranch-style houses, all expected to be priced around the high 700,000s. Designed for growing families and those seeking a cozier living space, this development aims to meet the evolving needs of the community.

A New Era for Families

Leo Gonzalez from Phoenix Management Holdings, who spoke on behalf of Pulte Homes, shared the vision behind the project. “Based on the market, we decided to offer a ranch product in this community,” he explained. This thoughtful approach not only provides new housing options but also frees up existing homes, making room for more new families to settle in.

Community-Friendly Expectations

Alongside the handsome houses, the development will feature a beautifully maintained landscaped buffer, managed by the homeowners association, and a pocket park for residents to mingle and relax. And guess what? They’re even partially paving Canton Center Road, enhancing accessibility to the area! The project will pave 650 square feet of the road, aiming to lobby for a complete paving solution in partnership with Wayne County.

Preserving the Past

This exciting development comes with a sense of nostalgia. The land is rich in history, having been farmed by the beloved Jay S. Richards, affectionately known as Farmer Jay. He spent over 40 wonderful years cultivating pumpkins and other produce, creating a cherished space for the local kids who worked alongside him. Sadly, Farmer Jay passed away in March 2023, leaving behind a legacy filled with fond memories.

Community Voices Moving Forward

Community members recently gathered during public hearings held by the Plymouth Township Planning Commission. The project was unanimously approved after two meetings, validating the community’s support for this transition. Trustee Jen Buckley, whose family has a close connection to Farmer Jay, shared her excitement for the project. “I watched my son dig and plant seeds for the pumpkins and drive his golf cart around… I knew eventually this day would come,” she reminisced. While she cherished the peace of having no neighbors, she is thrilled about the changes ahead.

A Bright Future Ahead

As Plymouth Township gears up for this new chapter, this cluster housing project not only promises cozy homes for incoming families but also aims to honor and celebrate the historical significance of the land. A plaque will be erected to commemorate the contributions of Farmer Jay, ensuring that his legacy continues to thrive alongside new beginnings.

This community-forward development is sure to spark joy and excitement in Plymouth Township’s future, creating a lovely neighborhood that catches the eye and warms the heart.
