Detroit – On a crisp autumn evening, the neighborhood of Old Redford is buzzing with excitement as residents and business owners prepare for their beloved annual Angels Night event. Taking place on the night before Halloween, this tradition has become a cornerstone of community spirit, offering a safe atmosphere for families to come together and embrace the joy of the season.
“It’s a time to come together as a community,” says John George, a dedicated member of Blight Busters. He reflects on the importance of these gatherings, emphasizing the bonds between neighbors and friends. “We’re not just here to patrol and protect Detroit; we’re here to celebrate all of the positive things happening in our community.”
As the preparation unfolds, it’s clear that the energy surrounding Angels Night is infectious. Now in its 32nd year, this annual celebration serves as a testament to the resilience and camaraderie of Old Redford residents. The tradition began in the mid-1980s, when following a wave of Halloween-related fires, community members decided to take matters into their own hands. “We just thought that if we changed the frequency, the energy around that night, we could make some positive improvements,” George explained, shedding light on the motivation behind this inspiring initiative.
A significant focus of this year’s celebration is on promoting positivity throughout the neighborhood. This year marks the grand opening of the city’s very first Art Alley, a vibrant space designed to showcase local artwork and creativity. Katrina Storm, an Art Alley Fellow for Blight Busters, shares her enthusiasm: “The Artists Village and Blight Busters have been amazing in being very inclusive about all art, all people.”
The Old Redford Art Alley is one of nine designated across the city, filled with colorful murals created by talented local artists. Supporters believe that this artistic haven will not only beautify the area but will also become a destination where community members can connect with various art forms. “You get introduced to possible art forms and artists that you had no clue even existed,” Storm adds with a sparkle in her eye, clearly excited about the potential these spaces hold.
Mark your calendars! The Old Redford Angels Night event will be held on Wednesday, October 30, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Join in on the festivities in the alley next to Artist Village, located at 17336 Lahser Road, Detroit, MI 48219. It’s sure to be an evening filled with laughter, creativity, and community spirit.
In a world where community bonds are often tested, Old Redford serves as a shining example of what can happen when neighbors come together for a common goal. This Angels Night, join the celebration of art, safety, and the unwavering spirit of unity that defines this vibrant Detroit neighborhood. Gather your friends, support your local artists, and let’s make this Halloween Eve a night to remember!
