Oakland County Teen Faces Adult Charges in 23-Year-Old’s Murder

In a shocking turn of events in Detroit, a 17-year-old boy from Farmington Hills, Oakland County has been taken into custody and charged as an adult in relation to the murder of a 23-year-old woman.

Reports suggest that police responded to a distress call on July 13, 2024, around 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Cardoni and Robinwood streets situated in the Hawthorne Park neighborhood. Police discovered the victim, Tavita Hunter, a Detroit resident, lying in the grass with a fatal gunshot wound to her back.

Brandon Butler, the held teenager, is suspected of firing a handgun at Hunter during a dispute. Eyewitnesses told the authorities that Butler ran away from the scene right after Hunter was shot.

Now facing charges for first-degree murder and a felony firearm violation, Butler will be tried as an adult, as per the court’s decision. The youth’s arraignment is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. this Thursday at the 36th District Court, where further details will emerge.

Authority’s Statement

City officials expressed their commitment to ensuring a thorough and fair trial, ensuring justice for the victim. They stressed Butler’s charges are severe and reiterated his detainment was warranted due to the severity of the crime. Despite his age, they stressed that Butler’s trial as an adult is an appropriate measure.
