Democrats from Oakland County Support Slotkin for Senate

In a recent development, U.S. Sen. Gary Peters has thrown his support behind U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin’s campaign for Senate. Peters joins a growing list of influential Democrats who are endorsing Slotkin in her attempt to retain Michigan’s open Senate seat.

In a gathering that took place in Birmingham, Peters, together with other key Democrats such as Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter and U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, praised Slotkin for her impressive performance in Congress. They particularly lauded her efforts in standing by the community of Oxford in the aftermath of the tragic mass shooting at Oxford High School in 2021.

The members of the Democratic cadre unanimously voiced their pride in their shared roots in Oakland County. Coulter noted that leaders from the county have a reputation for results, stating, “Oakland County, quite frankly, produces leaders who are work horses, not show horses.”

Slotkin is aiming to replace the retiring U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, and will be battling against former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers in November. Slotkin has received an endorsement from Stabenow as well, further strengthening her position.

Peters, while acknowledging Slotkin’s tenacity in getting things done, also highlighted her support for the Inflation Reduction Act. This comes on the heels of the news about the reduction in negotiated prices of several drugs made possible through this law.

Elissa Slotkin, who served as a Middle East Analyst for the CIA and has held various defense and intelligence positions during the administrations of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, also received praise for her national security expertise. Peters insisted that having someone with Slotkin’s unique background and experience in the Senate is necessary in the current times of uncertainty and global conflict.

On the other hand, Rogers, who served alongside Peters in the Michigan Senate before moving to Florida post his term in the U.S. House, came under criticism. Peters questioned Rogers’s absence from Michigan and emphasized the importance of having local leaders who are consistently present and fighting for their communities.

Despite the criticisms, Rogers’s campaign insists that he is a resident of Michigan, even going so far as sending cease and desist letters to local televisions stations over a campaign ad that claimed Rogers had left Michigan permanently.

The race between Slotkin and Rogers is heating up, with high stakes for the upcoming presidential campaign and the bid to secure a Democratic majority in the U.S. Senate. Slotkin, who has now moved past the primaries, is driven to gain the support of voters who might not have backed her initially.

In her campaign, Slotkin is emphasizing on issues that matter to the middle class – domestic manufacturing and protecting children from issues like gun violence, mental health concerns, opioid and fentanyl addiction, and climate change-induced severe weather conditions.

Slotkin is urging the Democrats to be on the offensive and protect their rights and democracy. Her vision includes strategic plans to counter the far-right policy proposals formulated by the conservative Heritage Foundation, known as Project 2025.

Despite the recent controversy regarding a misleading ad, Slotkin remains focused on her campaign and is geared to join the fight in protecting the rights and democracy of the people.
