Located in Michigan, Novi Township, the smallest township in the state, has been drawing attention for its harmonious coexistence and minimal political strife. Although nationally, politics is often a divisive subject, this quaint locale with a 0.11 square mile area manages to maintain unity and cooperation among its neighbors.

Residents, irrespective of being Democrats or Republicans, regularly come together for communal activities and even cast their votes in a unanimous fashion. As Nathan Foster, an uncontested nominee for the town trustee notes, “There’s never any controversy or competition, it’s very peaceful. No one is trying any shenanigans, the election won’t be stolen, it’s basically a given.”

Foster’s statement is a testament to the harmonious environment, as he, along with his neighbor Kevin McCallum, who doesn’t affiliate with any party, are the only two candidates contesting for the two trustee spots in the upcoming November ballot. Likewise, the only candidate for supervisor, Democrat Tony Galdikas, as well as non-affiliated individuals Clerk Janeen Crittenden, and Treasurer David Hall, face no competition in their pursuit of re-election.

The township board, which includes all these members who happen to be neighbors, come together regularly to discuss various matters concerning the township. Surrounded by a scenic neighborhood, adorned with mature trees and diverse wildlife, these meetings transpire in an idyllic setting. Janeen Crittenden mentions, “We always talk through what is best for the majority. I think we could be an example for this crazy world.”

Crittenden also highlights that even though they provide limited services, Novi Township functions like any other municipality, adhering to state laws, holding regular meetings, and approving budgets. The township of under 0.11 square miles, has about 1½ miles of paved roads, appealing landscape, 58 homes, and no commercial establishments.

Arguably, the biggest controversy the township faced was when the City of Novi attempted to annex it, more than 25 years ago. The township firmly decided to retain its status with majority of its residents voting against being annexed.

There is a strong sense of community in Novi Township where they proudly boast of their uniqueness in being the smallest township in the state of Michigan. The residents are hopeful that their township can serve as an exemplar of harmonious living and tranquillity.
