Commerce Township – A beautiful day turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on August 12, around 5 p.m. when a local swimmer, 57-year-old Alexandre Zorin from Novi, lost his life after being struck by a boat while attempting to swim across Lower Straits Lake.
Witnesses report that Zorin was swimming approximately 50-75 yards from shore near the 8700 block of Oak Beach Drive when the accident occurred. It appears that the unthinkable happened as Zorin encountered a 22-foot pontoon boat that unknowingly struck him. The lake was bustling with activity, and Zorin’s sudden presence in the water resulted in devastating consequences.
Despite the quick response from the Commerce Township Fire Department paramedics, who performed lifesaving measures immediately following the incident, Zorin’s injuries were severe. He suffered multiple lacerations to his arm, leg, and torso, and unfortunately, he was later transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly before midnight.
It is worth noting that Zorin was not wearing a life jacket during his swim. The water depth in the area was relatively shallow, around 4-6 feet, which may have contributed to the unexpected nature of the accident. As of now, authorities are not considering alcohol as a factor in the incident, leading them to focus on other possible explanations.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic encounter. The boat involved was operated by a 48-year-old resident of Commerce Township, who would undoubtedly be struggling with the emotional ramifications of this unfortunate accident.
This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, as many residents are left to grapple with the loss of an individual whose life tragically ended too soon. Friends and family members are coming together to honor Zorin’s memory and share their heartfelt condolences. The loss of life in such unexpected circumstances brings forth many questions and concerns about safety in our local lakes, sparking conversations regarding the importance of swimming gear, such as life jackets, especially in busy areas.
As the investigation unfolds, an autopsy has been scheduled with the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office to ascertain more details surrounding Zorin’s death. This somber event serves as a reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in familiar waters. Our hearts go out to Zorin’s loved ones as they navigate this unfathomable loss.
As we continue to follow this story closely, let us take a moment to reflect on the importance of water safety and the precious nature of life itself. In a blink of an eye, everything can change, and we must remain vigilant and cautious while enjoying our natural surroundings.
