Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Novi community mourns the passing of Melvin ‘Mel’ Edward Liedel, who passed away at 77. A devoted family man, veteran, and professional, Mel will be remembered for his kindness, love, and connection with friends and family. Visitation and funeral services are scheduled to honor his legacy.
In a deeply felt loss that has rippled through the neighborhood, Melvin “Mel” Edward Liedel passed away on January 26, 2025, at the age of 77. Surrounded by his loving family and cherished friends in Novi, Michigan, Mel’s departure leaves a void in the hearts of many who knew him.
Born on August 14, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, to Melvin and Yvonne Liedel (Nadeau), Mel dedicated his life to his family and friends. His love story began on May 16, 1974, when he exchanged vows with Margaret Consiglio at St. Phillip Neri Church in Detroit. Just recently, they celebrated an admirable milestone of 50 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring bond.
Mel and Margaret were blessed with three wonderful children: Megan (Brian) Bachand, Marc (Terri) Liedel, and Matthew Liedel. As a proud and adoring grandfather, he found immense joy in spending time with his grandchildren, Alyssa and Collin. His legacy continues to live on through them, alongside his siblings, Robert Louis Liedel and Denise Firoozi, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mel was not only a family man; he was also a dedicated servant to his country. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1968, showcasing the spirit of camaraderie and dedication often celebrated in military families.
After his military service, Mel transitioned into a successful career in building management, ultimately retiring as a Facilities Manager from the Hayman Company in 2014. Colleagues respected and admired him for his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence.
In addition to his work, Mel had many passions that brought him joy. He was a *dedicated fan of the Detroit Lions*, often seen wearing his team colors proudly. He especially loved to spend his free time at the family cabin “up north,” enjoying the beauty of nature and the warmth of togetherness with family.
Music filled Mel’s life, and he had a knack for making every gathering lively and fun. His spirit flourished in outdoor activities and in the company of friends, where laughter echoed and memories were made. Mel was the type of person who left a lasting impression on everyone he met, always cherishing the simple moments where he could connect with others.
A visitation for friends and family to pay their respects is scheduled for January 30, 2025, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Coats Funeral Home in Clarkston, Michigan. The funeral service will be held on January 31, 2025, at Christ the Redeemer Church in Lake Orion. An in-state viewing at the church will begin at 10:30 A.M., followed by mass at 11:00 A.M. A luncheon will be provided after the service, allowing everyone to gather for food and fellowship in Mel’s honor.
For those wishing to honor Mel’s memory, contributions can be made to the Michigan Parkinson Foundation, supporting research and resources for this significant cause.
Though Mel may have passed, his legacy lives on through the love and memories he created with his beloved family and friends. As the community remembers a truly remarkable man, Mel’s kindness, laughter, and unwavering spirit will be sorely missed.
