New President and CEO of McLaren Oakland Brings Journey of Resilience and Community Focus

New Leadership at McLaren Oakland: A Journey from Homelessness to Healthcare

In Pontiac, a remarkable story of resilience and dedication is unfolding as Lorenzo Suter steps into his role as the new president and CEO of McLaren Oakland. His journey to the top is nothing short of inspiring, as it reflects not only personal triumph but also a deep commitment to serving the community.

From Homelessness to Healthcare

Lorenzo Suter carries a unique perspective on life and service, thanks to his background. Growing up in a challenging environment just outside Lexington, Kentucky, he experienced homelessness firsthand with his single mother. “It was a very challenged community,” he shares candidly. Suter recalls how his mother made the brave choice to leave their troubled neighborhood, even if it meant living under a bridge. “Mom also worked three jobs; still, we could not make ends meet,” he says, shedding light on their difficult circumstances.

Eventually, their fortunes changed when they received assistance from Habitat for Humanity, an organization close to Suter’s heart. “Now I get to give people houses,” he proudly states, signifying his long-standing commitment as a board member for the nonprofit for over 25 years. “Through those early experiences, I found out you’re not a product of your environment, rather a product of your expectations.” Suter’s story is one of hope, transformation, and the power of community support.

A Passion for Service

Caring for others has been Suter’s guiding principle from a young age. After becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant while studying at Western Kentucky University, he juggled various jobs, including caring for a paraplegic patient and working in a daycare center. These experiences only fueled his desire to make a difference in people’s lives.

His academic journey led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and later, a Master’s and Doctorate in Healthcare Administration. His career span has seen him taking on various roles across multiple states before landing at McLaren Oakland. “Today, I have the influence to bring things to the community,” he states, highlighting his newfound ability to impact tens of thousands rather than just individual patients.

Vision for McLaren Oakland

Suter’s vision for McLaren Oakland is ambitious. As he talks about the recently opened McLaren-Oxford campus, a cutting-edge facility that’s a game-changer for the area, you can hear the excitement in his voice. The facility, which spans 54,000 square feet, is equipped with a talented emergency team, an oncology clinic, and a wealth of services tailored to community needs.

“In Oxford, it’s about user accessibility,” he emphasizes, explaining how the close proximity of quality healthcare can significantly improve patients’ lives. The McLaren Oxford facility is designed to keep patients from traveling long distances for crucial medical services, a sentiment Suter aims to expand across Oakland County.

Challenges Ahead

While Suter carries a heartfelt mission, he also faces challenges in achieving his goals. “It’s a challenge to make that long trip for medical care,” he admits. His aim is to provide a broad range of services including surgical procedures and specialties like cardiovascular care and dermatology, right where people need them.

Suter is determined not just to keep people out of the hospital for the sake of it, but instead to promote holistic care and wellness among the community. His urgent approach to healthcare is fueled by the understanding that each moment counts. “I’m blessed with today,” he reflects, indicating his awareness that tomorrow is never guaranteed. “The patient comes first; it cascades down to decisions.”

A Strong Future for McLaren Oakland

Lorenzo Suter’s ascent to the top at McLaren Oakland is a promising sign for the future of healthcare in the community. With his unique experiences, unwavering focus on patient needs, and a heartfelt mission to give back, the hospital is sure to become a beacon of hope and health for many. As he rolls up his sleeves to tackle the challenges ahead, one thing is clear: this new chapter in Pontiac’s healthcare saga is just beginning, and it’s one to watch!
