Exciting New Bistro on the Way for Birmingham
Birmingham residents, get ready for some fantastic news! A new bistro is on the horizon, and it sounds like it’s going to be a culinary delight that you won’t want to miss. During a City Commission meeting held on November 18, plans for Marrow received the green light to move forward, which means the owner can now pursue a liquor license.
What is Marrow?
Located at 283 Hamilton Row, Marrow Birmingham is set to be a unique blend of a butcher shop and a full-service deli-style restaurant. Think of it as an exciting version of the existing Marrow restaurant in Detroit’s West Village. The mastermind behind this venture is Ping Ho, the Founder and CEO of Backbone Hospitality. Since opening in Detroit in 2018, Marrow has been nominated for not one, not two, but four James Beard Awards!
In addition to the bistro, Ho runs the popular wine bar, The Royce, and co-owns the seafood restaurant Mink. It’s clear she knows her way around the culinary scene, and now she is bringing her talents to Birmingham for the first time!
A Focus on Breakfast and Lunch
So what can we expect from Marrow Birmingham? Ho mentions that the restaurant will focus on serving breakfast and lunch, along with selling wine and other goodies to go. This means fresh, delicious meals for your mornings and afternoons!
By obtaining a bistro license from the city, Marrow is now in a position to apply for a liquor license at the state level. This is particularly exciting because it means you’ll be able to enjoy a nice glass of wine or perhaps a craft beer with your meal. What a great way to enhance your dining experience!
Outdoor Dining Proposal
Another very appealing aspect of Marrow’s proposal is their plan to include outdoor dining. The commission discussed the possibility of setting up a patio in the street, which would add a lovely touch to your dining experience, especially on warm summer evenings. Of course, this will depend on approval from the city planning board.
Almost Ready to Open!
Ho is thrilled to share that construction on the restaurant is nearly complete. In fact, it’s currently undergoing inspections this week. The target date for opening is set for December, just in time for the holiday season. How exciting would it be to celebrate the holidays with mouth-watering meals from a brand-new local bistro?
Community Support
It seems the City Commissioners are just as excited about Marrow’s arrival. They expressed their support for bringing this new dining option to Birmingham, discussing the growing bistro scene and the desire for more family-friendly establishments.
During the meeting, Commissioner Andrew Haig and Mayor Pro Tem Clinton Baller even suggested looking into a map of bistros currently operating in the area. They want to ensure that Birmingham continues to grow its culinary offerings in a way that attracts residents and visitors alike.
Another Proposal on the Horizon
Before the focus turned to Marrow’s proposal, there was a mention of the Amalfi Coast, which was also seeking a bistro license. However, the city had to put their application on hold because they were not informed of the meeting. Mayor Therese Longe pointed out that Amalfi Coast didn’t yet have a permanent location, which meant the city couldn’t move forward with their application either.
Final Votes
Ultimately, the commission voted 6-0 in favor of moving forward with Marrow’s bistro application, while taking no action on the Amalfi Coast. It’s clear that Birmingham is gearing up for a vibrant restaurant scene, and Marrow is poised to be a fantastic addition.
So, mark your calendars and prepare your taste buds, Birmingham! A new culinary adventure awaits, and we can’t wait to dig in!
