A Natural Hair-Centered Salon Pops Up in Farmington Hills

Considered a haven for curls and confidence, a new salon is emerging in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Known for her passion and skill, a local entrepreneur popularly known as the Hair Mistress is making a name for herself and her brand in the diverse hair industry.

The Hair Mistress, also known as Julisa Anderson, has traveled the world styling hair and expanding her brand, all while keeping up with the evolving trends in hair care. Her latest venture? A salon dedicated to the beauty and maintenance of natural hair, a trend that is growing in popularity in and around Detroit.

“I feel like hair care is a good form of self-care. So we definitely encourage that here,” she said speaking of her new salon Divine by Hair Mistress.

With 15 years of experience under her belt, Anderson has a knack for making her clients feel comfortable and confident in their hair while offering a wide range of styles that cater to individual needs.

Her salon is a reflection of her commitment to reshaping society’s perception of hair. In a world where the CROWN Act is paving the way for inclusive hairstyles everywhere from schools to businesses, Anderson is providing a space for individuals to embrace and express their personal styles.

The salon boasts not just Anderson’s talent, but also that of lead stylist, Shanelle Johnson. Although new to natural hair styling, Johnson has dedicated the past three years to mastering the art of cutting, texturizing, and coloring natural curls.

“A lot of people are growing out of that [perming and silk pressing] and transitioning their hair to their natural curls. A lot of people are falling in love with their natural hair,” Johnson said.

Despite her extensive experience in the beauty industry, Anderson’s move into salon ownership was unexpected. When a Farmington Hills salon went up for sale, she knew it was time to make a move—”it was nothing short of divine timing,” she admits.

While Divine by Hair Mistress already offers appointments and welcomes walk-ins, the official grand opening is slated for May 4, 2025. Anderson is eager to unveil the renovations and see the client’s reactions to the salon’s transformation.

Until then, Anderson has set her sights on establishing her salon as a beloved fixture in the community. She envisions a ’90s salon vibe where clients can unwind, enjoy themselves, and become part of the family, saying, “We’ve had clients have babies, get married, and graduate. I’m sure there’s more exciting milestones to come.”
