Sponsor Our ArticlesStudents at Mount Marty University are coming together for a noble cause, organizing a project to assemble 200 personal hygiene kits for Watertown Cares. This initiative reflects the values of hospitality and service while providing crucial support to those in need in the community. A fundraising event at Pizza Ranch on February 17th will contribute to this effort, with 10% of profits and 100% of tips going towards the hygiene kits, encouraging everyone to join in and make a difference.
Excitement is buzzing at Mount Marty University as a group of students dives headfirst into a fantastic initiative aimed at supporting their local community. This innovative project is part of their capstone class and embodies the core Benedictine values of hospitality, service, and community. Students from diverse fields – such as Elementary Education, Human Services, and Business – have come together to create something wonderful that is set to help those in need.
The mission is clear: these enthusiastic students are aiming to assemble 200 personal hygiene kits for an incredibly important organization known as Watertown Cares by February 24th. This project isn’t just a school assignment; it’s a heartfelt effort to make a difference for individuals and families who benefit from the services provided by Watertown Cares. This organization offers temporary housing and personalized case management for those who are searching for permanent homes, showcasing how vital their work is in the community.
Watertown Cares has been busy, with its emergency shelter operating at full capacity since its launch in August 2023. The need for these essential services is apparent, as the community regularly sees a waiting list of about 20 to 40 individuals looking for assistance. It’s a staggering reminder of the urgent need for support within the community, and this is where the university students hope to step in and help through their project.
As a part of their mission, the students are organizing a fun-filled fundraising event that everyone is invited to attend! On Monday, February 17th, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Pizza Ranch will be the place to be. During this event, Pizza Ranch will generously donate 10% of all profits and donate 100% of tips earned while the students work. It’s a win-win situation where you can enjoy great food and know that a portion of your meal contributes to a meaningful cause.
Community members, friends, and families are encouraged to stop by and lend their support to this inspiring initiative. Each hygiene kit will be filled with essential items that will be a game-changer for those in need. It’s a small gesture that can have a significant impact on someone’s life.
If you want to make a difference in yet another way, contributing to the hygiene kit initiative goes beyond just attending the fundraiser. Donations are graciously accepted! Checks can be made payable to Mount Marty University with the word “CAPSTONE” written right in the memo line. These can be mailed directly to PO Box 1385, Watertown, SD 57201. Every contribution counts, and the students are grateful for any level of support the community can offer.
The capstone class at Mount Marty University truly appreciates the sense of community that surrounds this project. It’s an opportunity for everyone to come together, supporting those served by Watertown Cares, and ultimately making a positive change that ripples through the community. This collaborative approach not only teaches students about social responsibility but allows them to put their learning into practice in a way that genuinely benefits others.
With just a few weeks left until the hygiene kits are due, the clock is ticking, but the excitement is palpable. Every kit assembled will be a symbol of compassion, community spirit, and a hand extended to those who need it most. Whether through attending the fundraiser, making a donation, or simply spreading the word, everyone has a chance to be part of something truly special. Together, we can help fill those hygiene kits and support a great cause!
