Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Mifflin County Shelter Service, Inc. has received generous community donations that have stabilized its operations and alleviated immediate financial concerns. With winter approaching, the shelter faces ongoing challenges but continues to support the community by operating thrift stores and appealing for further donations. Executive Director Jane Neff has called for enhanced community involvement to ensure the shelter remains a lifeline for those in need, particularly as demand for its services rises.
In a small but heartwarming development, the Mifflin County Shelter Service, Inc. has recently received a wave of generous community donations that have eased the immediate worry of closure. During these challenging times, the help from local supporters has made a notable difference for individuals relying on the shelter, and for that, the Executive Director, Jane Neff, expressed heartfelt gratitude. Over the past 40 years, the shelter has touched countless lives, proving its role as a crucial lifeline for many.
As the winter months approach, the need for financial stability remains a top priority to ensure that essential services continue uninterrupted. The shelter currently faces significant challenges, as staff members have been reduced to part-time hours during the day, which has hindered effective case management and client support. A full operating budget is essential for implementing comprehensive services, including timely applications for healthcare, food benefits, and affordable housing options.
On a positive note, the shelter runs two thrift stores that are open four days a week, primarily staffed by dedicated volunteers. These stores generate a steady income, contributing to the shelter’s daily operating budget. The revenue from thrift sales, coupled with community donations of food, toiletries, and other necessities, has proven invaluable in keeping the services running.
However, the reality is that year-round expenses like utilities are not entirely covered by government grants, contributing to ongoing financial strain. Neff highlighted the importance of broadening the donor base, as an increased number of supporters would provide a more stable financial foundation for the shelter’s operations.
With the number of people seeking assistance on the rise, the shelter is striving to maintain its resources despite climbing utility and labor costs. Currently, the shelter serves an average of 30 individuals daily and has housed around 800 different people over the last nine years. The potential closure of the shelter could force clients to seek help from distant resources, many of which are already at full capacity.
In a bid to rally the community, residents are being encouraged to organize fundraisers, food drives, and other initiatives to support the shelter during this tough time. An anonymous donor has even stepped up to offer a matching challenge, aiming to raise $10,000 to help sustain operations. Every contribution counts, and the shelter is in great need of donations, including clothing, household products, and volunteer assistance, particularly for thrift store operations and client support.
The primary goal of the shelter is to provide safety and support for individuals experiencing homelessness in the community. As the colder months loom closer, the call for community involvement has never been more crucial. With a little help from everyone, the Mifflin County Shelter Service can continue its valuable work and ensure that no one has to brave the harsh elements alone.
In times like these, it’s important to remember that we all play a part in the well-being of our community, and coming together can make a world of difference for those in need.
