Michigan State Fair Keeps Going, New restrictions in Place Following Fatal Shooting

The folks out for a fun time at the Michigan State Fair found a slightly heightened sense of security this past Sunday, following tragic incidents involving a fatal shooting of a 14-year-old in the fair’s parking lot. This was an isolated incident, believed to have been brought on by an argument between the victim and the unidentified suspect.

While authorities ramped up their investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect, the fair organizers took new additional measures, bolstering the police presence, shortening fair hours for the last two days and imposing restrictions on unaccompanied minors.

Predictably, these changes did affect the fair’s overall mood, but as Flint residents Lettie Baker and Henry Bell pointed out, it certainly didn’t dissuade folks from taking part in the one of the most eagerly anticipated summer events. Pouring over livestock exhibits, they shared how they – along with their friends – had no fears or qualms about attending the fair.

The people running the fair also echoed these sentiments, stressing that the shooting – while alarming – was an anomaly and not something the over-a-century old fair is known for. They promised increased vigilance, especially during the peak hours, but remained hopeful that the fair-goers weren’t going to let this incident spoil their fun.

As a reassurance for parents and folks coming in with their children, law enforcement officials were more visibly present around the fairgrounds. Other safety measures, such as stricter controls on personal possessions, were also put into effect. Even items such as pocket knives, normally considered benign, were not allowed inside the fairgrounds.

In light of the recent incident, any attendees under the age of 18 had to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, as per an official update on the fair’s website. At the same time, weapons of any kind – including guns, knives, stun guns, and pocket knives – were strictly prohibited, regardless of whether the person in possession had a concealed weapons license.

Enduring as a favorite summer destination since 1849, the Michigan State Fair continues to offer a lively and comprehensive experience for the entire family, despite the recent unfortunate event. From exhilarating amusement rides, delectable fair food, livestock exhibits, to the immensely popular butter cows, the promise of a good, fun time still stands.
