A Michigan man was found dead at his residence in Quincy Township, shortly after he allegedly told police that he planned on confessing to a series of disturbing ATV crimes aimed at supporters of former President Trump and law enforcement. Among the reported incidents was an assault on an 80-year-old man who was knocked down while placing Trump signs in his yard, leading to his hospitalization in a critical condition.
Authorities received a tip-off from an individual on Samson Street who stated that they wished to confess to a crime related to an ATV driver within the past 24 hours. The unnamed individual urged the authorities to “send someone to pick me up.” Upon responded to the address, law enforcement found a 22-year-old male suspect who was identified as the caller. He was pronounced dead at the scene with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Authorities conducted a search of the residence under warrant and recovered multiple electronic devices. These will undergo examination by computer forensic experts as part of the ongoing investigation. Additional evidence including the four-wheeler used in the crimes and the clothing worn by the suspect was recovered on scene.
Law enforcement believe that the crimes perpetuated in the City of Hancock were politically motivated, with victims chosen based on their display of Trump election signs and law enforcement stickers and flags, commonly referred to as ‘thin blue line’ paraphernalia.
However, authorities have stated that there is no longer a threat to the public. The crimes, while shocking, seem to have ended with the death of the suspect.
The ongoing investigation is being assisted by several agencies, including the Michigan State Police, the Houghton City Police, Mercy EMS, Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the FBI Field Office in Marquette, Michigan.
This tragic event comes in the wake of three separate incidents that occurred on Sunday, all deemed by law enforcement to be politically motivated. Two of these incidents involved intentional vehicle vandalism, with an unknown antagonist specifically targeting vehicles belonging to Trump and law enforcement supporters.
While authorities continue to work diligently on these cases, they remind citizens that the rule of law will be upheld and any politically motivated violence will not be tolerated, regardless of the political affiliation of the victims or perpetrators. They have also extended their well wishes to the elderly victim who remains in critical condition.
