Livonia Celebrates the Inauguration of Christopher Dougherty as President of Madonna University

Livonia Welcomes a New Era: Christopher Dougherty Inaugurated as President of Madonna University

On a beautiful autumn day in Livonia, the air was filled with excitement and anticipation as Madonna University proudly celebrated the inauguration of its eighth president, Christopher Dougherty, Ph.D. This significant event took place on October 11 and was marked by a blend of tradition and a commitment to the values inspired by the Felician spirit.

A Journey of Faith and Knowledge

Dr. Dougherty, who officially took the reins as president on July 1, 2023, succeeds Ian Day, who served as interim president. With more than 30 years of experience in higher education, Dougherty brings a wealth of knowledge to his new role. His journey through academia has seen him wear many hats, from a full-time business faculty member to assistant and associate dean, and most notably as the provost and president at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.

The inauguration ceremony kicked off with a heartfelt Mass of thanksgiving in honor of Dougherty, setting a reflective tone for the day. Guests then gathered for the main ceremony where they were treated to a soul-stirring performance by the Madonna University Chorale. The stage was graced by university trustees, faculty members, representatives from the Felician Sisters, Livonia’s own Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan, and enthusiastic members of the student body, all there to offer their support and well wishes.

Embracing a Mission of Joy

As he addressed the assembly, Dougherty expressed his deep sense of humility and joy in accepting the presidency. “I say filled with joy intentionally,” he remarked, “for as you know, this year’s mission theme for Madonna is that the Lord has done great things for us. We are filled with joy.” His words resonated with the audience, particularly as this year marks the sesquicentennial of the Felician Sisters in North America, honoring the incredible journey of the five Felician Sisters who emigrated from Poland to begin their mission in the U.S.

Dougherty reflected on the humble beginnings of the Felician Sisters and how their legacy serves as an inspiration. “Joy and success are always rooted in humble beginnings,” he shared, drawing parallels with the stories of other institutions he has served, all founded by dedicated women religious who aimed to impact their communities positively.

Grounded in Community and Service

As Dougherty continued his address, he acknowledged the profound influence of Catholic sisters throughout his life. “Madonna is the third institution I have served founded by women religious,” he said, underlining the critical role of faith and community service in the educational sphere. He mentioned the common threads among these institutions’ histories, highlighting their commitment to serving others with compassion and excellence, echoing the core tenets of Catholic social teaching.

In attendance was Sr. Judith Marie Kubicki, CSSF, the provincial minister for the Felician Sisters, who offered heartfelt congratulations and words of encouragement. “Leadership is a gift or charism that a person receives for the flourishing of a particular community,” she stated. “On behalf of the Felician Sisters of North America, I congratulate you on this honor. May our good and gracious God bless you with wisdom and courage,” she continued, expressing the hope that Dougherty will lead Madonna University into a bright and hopeful future.

A New Chapter for Madonna University

As the day drew to a close, attendees left with a renewed sense of hope and connection, buoyed by Dr. Dougherty’s vision for the university. His journey is just beginning, but it is clear that his leadership will be characterized by a blend of faith, dedication, and commitment to the values that have shaped Madonna University. In this remarkable setting, the university looks forward to an exciting future under his guidance.

In honoring both tradition and forward-thinking, Livonia has indeed set the stage for an inspiring new chapter in the story of Madonna University.
