Members of the Kennedy family spent the weekend in vehement disapproval of their brother, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s controversial decision to publicly support the Republican nominee for President, distancing themselves from his recent political actions that violate the family’s long-established Democratic alignment.
In response to Robert Kennedy Jr.’s endorsement, Kerry Kennedy, his sister, came out hard against her brother. She expressed her intent to “separate and disassociate” herself from Robert due to his “flagrant and inexplicable effort to desecrate and trample and set fire” to their father’s memory.
In her conversation with Jen Psaki on a Sunday show, Kerry identified her outrage at Robert’s endorsement of Donald Trump, calling it a “gaudy and obscene embrace”. As one of RFK Sr.’s 11 children, Kerry has fostered a career in human rights law and currently serves as the president of the nonprofit, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights.
Kerry wasn’t the only Kennedy to sign a statement denouncing Robert’s endorsement. Other members of the Kennedy clan including Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney Kennedy, Chris Kennedy, and Rory Kennedy all added their signatures to the statement.
Max Kennedy, another of Robert’s younger siblings, also publically voiced his disapproval in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times. He labelled his brother’s actions as a “hollow grab for power” and a “strategic attempt at relevance”. Sharing his sister’s sentiment, Max cited that the endorsements came in stark contradiction of their father’s values of unselfish spirit. He expressed deep disappointment, stating that the family was “in mourning”.
Amid the backlash from his family, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. responded on Fox News Sunday. He expressed understanding towards his family’s disappointment but maintained that they were raised in an environment that encouraged passionate debates and yet, nurtured their familial bonds.
Robert confirmed that he had members of his extensive family who worked in his campaign and supported him despite their political divergences. He advocated for respectful disagreements and continued familial love despite differing opinions.
