Community Celebrates Revitalization of Kelley Park in Detroit’s Crary/St. Mary’s Neighborhood

Exciting Changes Unfold in Detroit’s Kelley Park

Detroit is abuzz with exciting news, particularly in the Crary/St. Mary’s neighborhood, where residents are celebrating the revitalization of their beloved Kelley Park. This cherished community gathering spot has undergone an impressive transformation, and the energy in the air is contagious. “Oh, man, this park means a place to gather,” said local resident Scott Loundman, as he stood by the newly finished playground.

A Community Celebration

On a beautiful Saturday, many residents gathered near the park to toast the completion of a stunning $750,000 renovation project. People were excited to see the changes that have turned Kelley Park into a vibrant community hub. Daniel Ferguson from Brothers of Kelley Park shared how significant it was for them to be involved in the park’s redesign. “They reached out and said, hey look, they’re about to re-do the park, we need you guy’s input,” he recalled, emphasizing the importance of community participation in shaping the park’s future. “We 100% participated.”

A Powerful Partnership

This revitalization was made possible through a collaboration between the city of Detroit, Wayne County, and the Gilbert Family Foundation. Such partnerships showcase how collective efforts can enhance community spaces. Local residents voiced their ideas about what they wanted to see, leading to the incorporation of new features that cater to all ages and interests.

What’s New at Kelley Park?

For years, Kelley Park hosted just a basic swing set and a large field – a far cry from what it boasts today. The renovations have brought forth:

  • An updated playground that promises fun for all kids.
  • A dog park for furry friends and their owners to enjoy.
  • An expanded walking loop that invites leisurely strolls or brisk jogs.
  • An outdoor fitness area for those looking to break a sweat.
  • An updated basketball court where local players can shoot hoops.
  • A brand-new picnic shelter ideal for family gatherings.
  • Numerous benches and water fountains to enhance the park’s usability.

According to Lynn McNeil, a District 1 Community Liaison, the revitalization has created “a place to come” for children in the neighborhood. “They revitalized and gave the kids in this neighborhood a place to come,” she emphasized. The excitement among residents was palpable as they explored the updated spaces and reflected on the memories they’ve created at Kelley Park.

Looking Forward

Residents are not only celebrating the new features but also the potential for further improvements in the future. “No,” McNeil said, when asked if they wanted the progress to stop here. “They want it to continue. They want the growth. They want the revitalization to continue.” This sentiment resonates with many who call the neighborhood home, showcasing a community united in its vision for a better tomorrow.

As Kelley Park continues to grow and evolve, it stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and collaborative partnerships. The revitalized space is now not just a park, but a thriving symbol of hope and togetherness for the residents of Detroit’s Crary/St. Mary’s neighborhood.
