Kamala Harris Breaks Barriers as First Black Woman and Asian American Presidential Nominee for Democrats

Celebratory glass ceiling shattering.

Kamala Harris Makes History as First Black Woman, Asian American Presidential Nominee

Securing the Democratic Nomination

In an historic event of epic proportions, Vice President Kamala Harris has been officially nominated as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee. In doing so, she becomes the first Black woman and first Asian American from a major party to secure this designation. On Friday afternoon, Harris gained the majority votes needed from her party’s delegates, making her the official nominee just a day after voting opened.

The Democratic National Committee made the announcement via a livestream, with Biden campaign aides and DNC chairman Jaime Harrison celebrating this significant moment. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States,” Harris said during a Democratic party-sponsored livestream phone call, expressing her commitment to the promise of America.

A Historic Moment

Securing her position at the top of the ticket after President Joe Biden stepped down, Harris is set to go against the 45th president and Republican nominee, Donald Trump, in November. Crossing party lines, Harris’ nomination has found support among top national leaders such as former President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Leading up to the Democratic National Convention starting on the 19th August in Chicago, Harris revealed that her official acceptance of the nomination will be made once the virtual voting period concludes on Monday.

The Road to the White House

As Harris prepares to make her bid for the presidency official, she still has to announce her vice-presidential candidate before appearing in Philadelphia alongside her anticipated running mate. Further stops are planned in cities across America, including Detroit, Raleigh, Savannah, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.

The race between Harris and Trump has already heated up, with close predictions in several battleground states. Trump’s retaliation to Harris’ nomination included using racially charged rhetoric, echoing his past controversies. However, Harris, whose heritage includes both Black and South Asian elements, retaliated by slamming Trump’s remarks.

Facing Racial and Gender Bias

Since becoming the leading candidate for the Democrats, Harris has had to face an increase in racist and misogynistic attacks. Conservative voices, including Trump and GOP allies, have taken jabs at her position, labeling her as a “DEI candidate” in an attempt to undermine her achievements as a person of color and as a woman rising to a place of power and influence.

Despite the unwarranted smear tactics, Harris continues her campaign with resilience, backed by countless Americans who believe in her leadership and the historic change she represents.
