Grinch Steals Holiday Joy from Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company
Plymouth, Michigan – The holiday spirit took a hit recently when a local ballet company found themselves victims of a brazen theft, right in the midst of preparations for their annual performance of The Nutcracker. However, this story has a twist that even the best holiday tales would envy: community support and determination that shine brighter than the Grinch’s outdated bill of goods.
A Trailer Full of Magic Stolen
On the night of November 17th, a trailer loaded with props essential for the ballet’s enchanting performances was stolen from a parking lot in Canton. The trailer belonged to the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company, and it was filled to the brim with items critical for creating the mesmerizing ambiance of The Nutcracker. These props included a charming grandfather clock, a cozy fireplace, and an extendable Christmas tree, none of which would serve any purpose outside of stage magic.
Enter Brandon Keel, 20, the suspect who has been aptly dubbed the local “Grinch.” According to Wayne County prosecutors, he is the alleged thief who made off with the trailer during the holiday season. After an extensive investigation and collaboration among Canton police, Plymouth Township officers, Toledo authorities, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Keel’s antics caught up to him on December 17th when he was arrested.
Determined to Keep the Show Going
Despite the overwhelming feeling of loss after the theft, June Smith, the artistic director of the Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company, said there was never a moment of doubt about continuing with their scheduled performances on December 7 and 8. “There was never a feeling of, ‘We can’t do it.’ It was, ‘How are we going to do it?'” Smith explained.
As the investigation unfolded, the police recovered the show’s backdrop, but the unfortunate news is that it was discovered soaking wet, raising concerns about whether it could be salvaged. Sadly, the trailer itself remains missing, casting a shadow over an otherwise bright time as the ballet company strives to spread joy through their holiday production.
Community Steps Up to the Plate
The spirit of giving wasn’t lost on the community, which rallied behind the ballet company. A GoFundMe campaign was started after the chilling theft, and the response was heartwarming. The fundraiser successfully raised a remarkable $18,770 to help replace the stolen props. Smith teared up reflecting on the support received: “It’s really hard to put into words the feeling of how much support we received from not just our members and parents of our members, but the community.”
This overwhelming sense of camaraderie reminds us all that even in the face of adversity, kindness and generosity can flourish. It seems that not only are the dancers putting in their best efforts on stage, but they also have an entire community dancing right alongside them in heart.
Legal Troubles Looming for Keel
As for Mr. Keel, he now faces serious legal repercussions with charges of larceny for $20,000 or more and receiving and concealing stolen property of equal value—both felonies. A judge at the 35th District Court has set his bond at $20,000 and has mandated that he wear a tether pending further proceedings. Furthermore, court records indicate that Keel is also suspected of stealing another trailer in Plymouth Township, making this a rather interesting season for the justice system as well.
The Plymouth-Canton Ballet Company may have faced unexpected challenges this year, but they continue to push forward, embodying the very essence of the holiday spirit. As they prepare to perform The Nutcracker, it seems their resilience will write a new chapter in this season’s story—a tale where even a Grinch can’t steal the joy of the community.
