Garden City Food Safety Inspections Reveal Violations

Garden City has found itself in the spotlight once more, but this time it’s not for anything celebratory. Recent inspection reports from the Wayne County Health Department have revealed some startling violations at a number of restaurants between October and December. While many establishments have taken steps to rectify their infractions, the findings serve as a reminder for all diners to be vigilant about where they choose to eat.

A Sneak Peek into Big Moes Kitchen

Let’s begin with Big Moes Kitchen located on Inkster Road. During a routine inspection on October 8, an inspector uncovered several issues that raised some eyebrows. For starters, they found sliced tomatoes at a startling temperature of 44.8°F and raw chicken sitting at a dangerous 46.4°F. This is particularly worrying because cold held potentially hazardous foods need to be kept at 41°F or below. The ambience of the reach-in cooler wasn’t doing any favors either, sitting at nearly the same temperature!

Among other violations, inspectors discovered shrimp stored in black garbage bags outside and some pretty questionable sanitation practices. For example, lemon-scented bleach was being used in the food preparation area, which is a big no-no. Luckily, most violations were corrected during the inspection, but it did leave some diners wondering about the restaurant’s food safety practices.

Poke Doo: A Taste of Trouble

Next on the list was Poke Doo on Middlebelt Road, which faced its own set of issues. On that fateful day, inspectors found expired popping boba and syrups that had overstayed their welcome. Though these expired items were promptly discarded, it turns out this was not the first time the restaurant had been flagged for such concerns. Plans were made for corrective measures, and the establishment is now required to submit a risk control plan to the inspector.

Intriguingly, the inspection revealed raw salmon improperly stored over ready-to-eat foods, a violation that was once again corrected on the spot. However, the lack of soap at hand washers and an unapproved can of ant spray definitely were not helping their case.

Beirock Wraps and More

Then there’s Beirock Wraps, which had its own issues when inspected on October 3. Inspectors discovered bags of moldy orange peppers in the cooler, while cheesecakes and garlic sauces were stored at dangerous temperatures. Talk about a recipe for disaster! They even noted the handwashing sink wasn’t providing hot water initially, but managers correct that right away. It’s good to see some establishments are taking these findings seriously.

Not Just A Few Bad Apples

Diving deeper into the inspection reports, even Dominos Pizza and Garden City Cafe weren’t off the hook. At Dominos, a quaternary ammonium solution meant for sanitizing was found to be too weak. Meanwhile, Garden City Cafe saw moldy strawberries and a puzzling mix of chemical and food storage. With a repeat offense of unsanitary conditions, it becomes clear cut that all establishments need to be diligent about cleanliness.

What’s Next for Garden City Restaurants?

Several other spots also faced issues during their inspections, including Garden City Nutrition and Nova Cafe, reinforcing the importance of adherence to health codes. With mandated risk control plans and potential further enforcement in place, it’s evident that keeping diners safe is the top priority here.

These recent inspections highlight the ongoing effort needed to maintain health standards in the food industry. So, while Garden City offers plenty of delicious dining options, it’s more essential than ever for patrons to stay informed.
