Transforming Lives: Franklin Curlin’s Journey from Homelessness to Hope

Meet Franklin Curlin, a remarkable 60-year-old case manager at the Erie City Mission, located at 1017 French Street. Franklin’s story isn’t just an ordinary one; it’s a powerful testament to resilience and redemption that shines a light on how one can turn their life around. Originally hailing from New Jersey, Franklin spent a significant portion of his earlier life working as a stagehand in the entertainment industry, contributing his talents to major productions like “Phantom of the Opera” and “Sweeney Todd” from 1986 to 2004.

A Battle with Substance Abuse

However, like many bright stars, Franklin faced personal challenges that dimmed his shine. Struggling with substance abuse, he found himself on a tumultuous path that led him to homelessness. But in 2003, a pivotal moment came when he met a woman who introduced him to the Erie City Mission. This encounter marked the turning point he desperately needed. With support and guidance, Franklin entered the City Mission’s New Life Program, a comprehensive residential recovery program designed specifically for men seeking a fresh start.

Building a New Future

Fast forward 20 years, and Franklin emerged from the New Life Program not only as a changed man but also ready to give back. He started working at the City Mission as a supervisor at the men’s desk shortly after completing the program. His deep-seated desire to help others led him to eventually become a case manager in 2024, where he now oversees a caseload of 30 to 50 individuals in the same New Life Program that saved his life.

The Role of a Case Manager

In his role, Franklin is not just a manager but a beacon of hope for those he serves. He dedicates his days to meeting with 14 to 20 clients, offering support and guidance tailored to their individual needs. His approach revolves around establishing genuine relationships, where he works hand-in-hand with clients to develop individual care plans that address critical areas like mental health and addiction.

Cultivating Change through Support

Franklin doesn’t stop there. His commitment extends to encouraging clients to enter detox programs and stay longer to gain essential life skills and receive much-needed support. Beyond administrative tasks, he is actively involved in daily activities at the City Mission, whether it’s something as simple as monitoring public meals or engaging clients in fun activities like bowling. Every interaction is an opportunity for him to foster change and offer encouragement.

A Day in the Life

Franklin’s day kicks off bright and early at 4:30 a.m., beginning with meditation and prayer. This reflective start sets the tone for his busy day filled with breakfast duties and monitoring activities at the mission. He takes pride in the fact that he can witness clients graduate from the New Life Program and go on to create fulfilling lives, knowing full well the hard work it takes from everyone involved.

The Heart of a Service

What sets Franklin apart in his field is his genuine passion for helping others. Colleagues often remark on his selflessness, noting that he never says no to those in need—a testament to his enormous heart. For him, case management is not just a job; it’s about igniting a spirit of love and passion through honest service to others, putting the needs of individuals at the forefront over any potential financial gains.

A Story of Hope

Franklin Curlin’s journey from homelessness to his role at the City Mission underscores a powerful message: everyone deserves a second chance. With his unwavering dedication to supporting others, he continues to transform lives one person at a time. As we see in Franklin’s story, hope is not out of reach, and recovery is genuinely possible with the right support.
