WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – In a case that has captured the attention of the local community, a former police sergeant from Westland has been found guilty of ethnic intimidation and assault against a casino security guard. On November 1, 2024, after a tense trial, a Wayne County jury delivered their verdict against Kevin Yudt, aged 43, who now faces serious consequences for his actions that unfolded at the MGM Grand Detroit.
It all went down on April 6, 2023, when Yudt attempted to enter the casino but was turned away by security staff. Reports indicate that he appeared to be intoxicated, which led to the decision to deny him access. Rather than accepting this, Yudt, who insisted on identifying himself as a Westland police sergeant, responded with aggression. He allegedly threatened a security guard, stating, “I’ll be waiting for you when you come to Westland, and you will not survive.” In an unsettling display, he also poked the guard in the chest while hurling racial slurs.
As a result of his actions that night, Yudt was terminated from his position with the Westland Police Department in May 2023. Following a lengthy investigation, charges were finally filed against him in May 2024. The jury found him guilty of two counts of ethnic intimidation, each carrying a penalty of up to two years in prison, and one count of assault and battery, which could result in a 93-day misdemeanor sentence.
The response from the Wayne County community has been one of shock and disappointment. Many are grappling with the implications of having a former law enforcement officer involved in such violent and threatening behavior. “It’s disheartening to see someone who swore to protect and serve act this way,” said a local resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We expect more from those in positions of authority.”
Yudt is scheduled for sentencing on December 6, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. in the 3rd Circuit Court. Residents and community leaders are closely watching the proceedings, eager to see what measures will be taken to address Yudt’s crimes. There is a palpable hope that this case will serve as a reminder to hold all individuals, especially those in positions of power, accountable for their actions.
This incident has opened up a broader conversation about the responsibilities of law enforcement personnel, especially when facing circumstances that can lead to intoxicated or aggressive behavior. Many community members are advocating for stronger training and accountability measures within police departments, aiming to prevent similar situations in the future.
As discussions continue, the case of Kevin Yudt stands as a reminder of the importance of maintaining integrity, respect, and professionalism, especially in positions that require a commitment to the public’s safety and wellbeing.
