Novi Fitness Instructor Saves Man’s Life During Heart Attack
Novi — In an astonishing turn of events, a local fitness instructor has been hailed a hero after she saved a man’s life during a heart attack incident at the Novi Athletic Club last month. Chuck Ross, who had been joyfully playing tennis with friends, suddenly collapsed on the court, sending shockwaves through the facility.
The Dramatic Day
The clock read 8:58 a.m. on October 18 when Chuck was deep into a game of tennis when he went down unexpectedly. Fortunately, two of his friends acted quickly, initiating CPR while another rushed to get help from the front desk. It was at that moment, luck was on their side. Fitness coordinator Kim Taylor-Papp, who happened to be nearby filling her water bottle, heard the commotion and sprang into action.
A Lifesaving Response
Upon arriving at the scene, Kim assessed the situation and quickly realized they needed an automated external defibrillator (AED). “I noticed they didn’t have the AED, so I ran and got it,” Kim explained. “I instructed them to continue chest compressions until I got there.” Her swift actions led to Chuck receiving critical care just in the nick of time.
“The shock from the AED gave him a rhythm back to his heart, allowing him to regain consciousness just as the EMTs arrived,” Kim recalled. Thanks to her heroic efforts, Chuck was alert as he was bundled into the ambulance, where he received further treatment at Ascension Providence Hospital.
The Aftermath
In what feels like a miracle, Chuck spent only two days in the hospital after having stents put into his heart, returning to the gym shortly after. His wife, Cathy, who witnessed the life-saving action from another court, couldn’t help but feel grateful. “God had a part in this; everything just lined up perfectly,” she said, reflecting on how Chuck rarely played tennis on Fridays and was fortunate to be around those who could help.
Chuck himself shared, “I’ve never had chest pain or any signs of heart disease before. I fell so suddenly, lights out!” It turned out Chuck had a blockage in his left anterior descending artery, often referred to as the “widowmaker,” which could have easily been fatal if not for the immediate attention he received.
A New Mission
In light of this near-tragic experience, the Ross couple has now taken it upon themselves to get educated about CPR. “We’re signing up for classes with the Novi Fire Department—it’s important,” Chuck noted, underscoring that anyone can experience a similar situation. “If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone.”
Kim, who has been a fitness instructor for nearly 40 years, echoed those sentiments, emphasizing that CPR training is crucial for everyone. “It’s not every day you save a life, but it’s a skill that can make all the difference,” she said with pride.
Community Impact
Chuck and Cathy made it a point to formally thank Kim in person shortly after the incident, forging a bond over the extraordinary circumstances. They echoed the urgent need for community members to become familiar with CPR, stating that it could save lives.
The Novi Fire Department offers free CPR classes for residents, providing a fantastic opportunity for locals to gain potentially lifesaving skills. More details can be found by calling Novi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services.
Final Thoughts
This heart-stopping episode reminds us all how quickly life can change and the importance of community and preparedness. “Because of Kim, I’m still here today,” Chuck said last week, “That shock saved my life. I’ll always be grateful.” In moments of health emergencies, it truly does take a village—and the right people at the right time.
