Special Film Event in Farmington Hills: A Dive Into WWII History
Farmington Hills is gearing up for an exciting and enlightening event that promises to unveil a largely forgotten chapter of history! This special occasion will kick off the new fall 2024 term of the SOAR Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) with the screening of the compelling film, Shadows of Freedom, directed by Amos Carlen.
An Untold Story of Resistance
On Friday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m., attendees will gather in the SOAR LLI classroom located in the HAWK Farmington Hills Community Center, where they will witness the eye-opening narrative of the Jewish and French resistance in Algiers during 1942. This was a pivotal time in World War II, and the contributions of these 388 young individuals are nothing short of remarkable. Though inexperienced, their efforts significantly altered the course of the war.
These brave resisters found themselves almost accidentally supporting the Allies in North Africa, ultimately paving the way for a successful invasion of Algiers by U.S. forces—a crucial part of what would become known as “Operation Torch.” This operation not only marked the Allies’ first significant victory against Nazi forces but also played a vital role in saving the lives of over 500,000 Jews in North Africa, who were under the looming threat of Hitler’s Final Solution.
History Worth Remembering
Although Operation Torch might not be a term that readily comes to mind for many, it stands as the longest invasion in military history. The film comes as a reminder that there are still so many heroes and significant actions from this tumultuous time that deserve to be remembered and appreciated.
Interactive Experience
What makes this event even more special is that it won’t just be a passive viewing. After the film, attendees will have the chance to interact with Amos Carlen himself via Zoom. This offers a unique opportunity to ask questions and delve deeper into the making of the film and the stories it portrays.
