Farmington Hills has become a bustling hub for love as couples seek to tie the knot in simple yet meaningful ways. Last month, in a heartfelt ceremony at the city hall, Mary Kama and Martin Atabong exemplified this trend. The duo, hailing from Cameroon, entered into marriage in fewer than five minutes and spent less than $300 to seal their vows. With only two witnesses by their side, the couple couldn’t contain their joy as they took this significant step in their love story that dates back to 2017.
“It’s an awesome feeling,” Martin expressed, beaming with excitement after signing their marriage license. “It was time for us.” For Mary, who at 55 is navigating her first marriage, the moment was equally special. Despite living in Greece while they courted, she returned to marry the love of her life. Holding a bouquet of flowers and surrounded by gleeful smiles, Mary said, “I’m really madly in love with him.” Martin, now 62, shared that this marriage is his third and final partnership, as he owns a medical transportation company in Farmington Hills.
The ceremony took place on August 13 and marked the 39th of 45 weddings Mayor Theresa Rich has conducted in her short time in office. Officiating weddings is one of the joyous responsibilities of the mayor, and since her swearing-in last November, she has cherished every bit of it. “I’ve presided over a lot of joy,” Mayor Rich remarked, highlighting that witnessing the start of so many families brings her immense happiness. From same-sex to interracial couples, there’s no shortage of diversity among the pairs she has united.
Rich ensures each couple meets specific requirements, such as having at least one Farmington Hills resident, while also bringing a personal touch to every wedding. Couples pay a modest fee of $175, with a portion going towards the Mayor’s Youth Council. They’re required to obtain a marriage license from Oakland County before their big day. And for those who want to include family and friends far away, some couples use video calls to bridge the gap.
The mayor has even donned unique outfits to match her couples’ traditions, like when she wore a kutha for an Indian wedding. Styles for wedding attire run the gamut—from elegant white dresses to casual jeans and sneakers—showing that love truly knows no bounds or dress codes.
Some couples are opting for city hall to take care of the legalities before heading off for lavish destination weddings later. This was the case for Andrew and Mikayla Gregor. The couple, who met while working at a gym in Plymouth, got married at Farmington Hills City Hall on June 13 before traveling to Switzerland for a grand celebration with family later on. “We didn’t want to pay $75 a plate for guests we hadn’t seen in years,” Andrew explained about their decisions. Celebrating first at the city hall allowed them the freedom to create a memorable destination trip without breaking the bank.
Alexis Brown fits into this trend too, having recently had her wedding at city hall, marking it as one of the final ceremonies for 2023. Alexis, alongside her groom Demetrius, decided to marry without waiting for the perfect moment financially. “We wanted to set an example for our daughters,” she shared, emphasizing that the essence of marriage is about love and commitment—not the extravagance of the event itself. It was about the vows exchanged in the presence of family, highlighting that every love story is valid, regardless of how it is celebrated.
For modern couples in Farmington Hills, getting married at city hall is not about the venue but about unity. As Mayor Rich sums up, it’s a beautiful way to promote joy and optimism in a community filled with love, proof that happiness often blooms in the simplest of ceremonies.
