Farmington residents are saying a bittersweet farewell as the historic Groves-Walker American Legion Post 346 building, a beloved local landmark for over 75 years, has recently met its end. The building, located at 31775 Grand River Ave., was demolished to pave the way for a new 30-unit apartment development that is expected to bring a fresh vibe to the area.

A New Chapter for Local Veterans

With the old post gone, the American Legion has taken a big step forward, relocating to a shiny new facility at 21023 Farmington Road, just north of Eight Mile Road in Farmington Hills. The new place is a fantastic upgrade for the legion, which has been a pillar in the community for decades, serving veterans and providing a space for gatherings, remembrance, and camaraderie.

Cervi Construction, a developer based in Livonia, is putting the finishing touches to the plans for what will be called Legion Square. According to the city of Farmington, this upcoming residential complex will boast 1,500 square feet of living space in each unit and is expected to hit the rental market with an asking price of around $2,000 per month. While this might seem steep for some, the promise of modern living in such a central location is likely to attract many new residents eager for a fresh start.

To honor the legacy of the former post, a commemorative plaque will be erected at the Legion Square site. There weren’t even chairs to sit on; everyone stood during the meetings, which were short and brisk, thanks to the frigid temperatures. Fortunately, by the following month, the upstairs subflooring was completed, and the installation of a furnace brought some much-needed warmth to the gatherings.

Fast forward a couple of years to 1950, and the post made headlines again when they purchased a bronze plaque in memory of the brave souls from Farmington and Farmington Township who made the ultimate sacrifice during World Wars I and II. The dedication ceremony saw the post filled to capacity as loved ones of the fallen gathered to pay their respects and remember those who served.
