Farmington’s Young Entrepreneurs Shine at Holiday Craft Shows

Farmington’s Young Entrepreneurs Shine at Holiday Craft Shows

Farmington has become the bustling hub of creativity and commerce thanks to its highly anticipated annual craft shows. These events provide an exciting platform for local crafters and budding entrepreneurs to showcase their talents and products. This year’s festivities kicked off with the Let It Snow Craft Show at East Middle School on November 23, attracting many young vendors eager to display their handmade creations. Mark your calendars—the Very Merry Marketplace at Lanigan Elementary School is set for December 14!

A Brainchild of Community Spirit

The incredible idea to allow students to sell their crafts during these shows came from the inspirational Debby Kuna. As the president of the East Middle School PTSA and a dedicated first-grade teacher at Lanigan, Debby wanted to create opportunities for young minds to explore entrepreneurship. “My son, Dylan, showed an interest in selling his artwork, and I thought—why not open it up for other kids?” Debby shared, brimming with enthusiasm. What began with just three young sellers is now a thriving marketplace with 13 out of 34 vendors being students!

Crafting Confidence

The students, ranging in age from 8 to 26, are diving headfirst into the world of small business. With offerings from jewelry to 3D-printed toys, it’s clear that creativity knows no bounds in Farmington. Dylan Kuna, now 14, is particularly excited about his journey. “I really like the sense of community and it’s a friendly place to sell my art,” he said. Thanks to participating in these shows, Dylan managed to save up for an impressive $1,200 laser cutter, taking his craft to a whole new level!

And it’s not just Dylan making waves. Fab Beckett Schimmele, at just 11, has taken to crocheting. She got inspired by her aunts and has already made quite a name for herself, crafting beautiful slime, squishies, and heaps of crochet items. “It’s kind of relaxing, and I can do it quickly,” Beckett said with a smile, highlighting how craft shows have motivated her to set creative goals.

Sibling Success Stories

Siblings Lillian and William Evans are two shining examples of young entrepreneurs who return year after year. Lillian, 12, is busy making vibrant handmade scrunchies and earrings. “I like getting money for my crafts so I can spend it on field trips!” she exclaimed, revealing her ambition to save for fun adventures.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old William has embraced the art of sewing, creating stylish key fobs and headbands that showcase his skilled craftsmanship. “My mom taught me when I was four,” he proudly stated, expressing how much he enjoys connecting with customers at the craft shows. “It’s great to meet people and share my work!”

Heartwarming Community Support

The craft shows not only bolster young talent but also foster community engagement. Parents and teachers rally around these aspiring entrepreneurs, cheering them on as they navigate the challenges and joys of running a small business. William Evans III, father of Lillian and William, remarked, “It’s wonderful to see them gain confidence and learn valuable skills in a supportive environment.”

Moreover, this year’s craft shows expanded inclusivity by featuring students from the Visions Unlimited program, meant for students with special needs ages 18-26. Their participation brings radiant smiles and a sense of pride. “The joy they experience is hard to describe,” shared Dara Weber, a paraprofessional with the program. “They are incredibly proud of what they create.”

Save the Date

Don’t miss the upcoming Very Merry Marketplace at Lanigan Elementary School on December 14, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free! Plus, students from the Visions Unlimited program will also showcase their talents at the Farmington Public Library on December 17. What a delightful way to celebrate the holidays and support our local youth!
