Exciting Changes Shake Up the County Commission!

In a thrilling display of democracy, the county commission saw a major political shift on Tuesday. This year’s election results were packed with surprises and saw one seat switch parties, which is certainly worth discussing! Commissioner Ajay V. Raman fell short in his bid for reelection against Republican challenger Robert Smiley, who clinched victory with a narrow margin of just 200 votes, garnering 16,419 votes to Raman’s 16,219.

Republican Stronghold Maintained

Smiley’s win marks an exciting transition as he joins a squad of seasoned Republicans already on the board. These incumbents faced fierce Democratic challengers but managed to secure their spots with flying colors:

  • Michael Spisz of Oxford tallied 24,231 votes, defeating Paul Kelly who received 14,581.
  • Michael J. Gingell of Lake Orion beat Christina Joy Root with a commendable 23,933 to 15,983 tally.
  • Bob Hoffman from Highland Township outshined his opponent Derek Marshall with an impressive 27,497 votes compared to 13,052.
  • Karen Joliat from Waterford topped Jesse Brown with a significant margin of 25,578 to 15,505.
  • Christine Long in Commerce Township also had a lovely victory, winning 25,876 to 14,885.

Christine didn’t hold back her joy on social media Wednesday, saying, “I truly enjoy representing each and every one of you. Always feel free to contact me. I work for ALL of you.” That’s a real commitment to the constituents!

Democrats Hold Steady

Despite the spirited Republican wins, the Democrats managed to hold onto a noticeable majority with a 12 to 7 lead on the commission. Brendan Johnson excelled in a tight race against Republican Dale Hetrick, securing 17,756 votes to Hetrick’s 16,232, with just over 1,500 votes separating them.

Johnson expressed his pride in maintaining his lead, especially considering the overall rightward shift seen among the electorate, stating, “To be honest, I’m rather proud for the margin to have held as steady as it has.” He attributes this success to his diligent public service and his hard work knocking on thousands of doors. Sounds like he’s really dedicated to his community!

Heartfelt Gratitude from Winners

Another Democrat, Penny C. Luebs, who received 21,915 votes against Republican Edward Kempen, also expressed her thanks on social media. She conveyed her gratitude, stating, “Thank you, everyone, for your vote! It is an honor to serve as your Commissioner. Life is good!” Doesn’t that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside?

More Democratic Wins

The trend continued with other incumbent Democrats emerging victorious over their Republican opponents:

  • Yolanda Smith Charles of Southfield, winning by a landslide with 32,540 votes to 6,756.
  • Linnie Taylor from Southfield notched up a strong victory with 29,027 to 9,062 over W. Jackson.
  • Charlie Cavell from Ferndale secured 28,956 votes, defeating Paul Taros with 12,968 votes.
  • William Miller III in Farmington Hills won at 22,177 votes against Jacob Kovacs with 12,090.
  • Gwen Markham celebrated her win with 21,178 votes against Daniel Lawless.
  • Ann Erickson Gault came out victorious with 19,647 to 15,086 against Douglas K. MacLean.
  • Marcia Gershenson, the vice chair, won decisively with 24,446 votes to 17,977.
  • Dave Woodward, the commission’s chairman, secured a solid win with 23,520 over Regina Wilk.

What’s Next?

With the dust now settling from this exhilarating election, attention turns to the upcoming sessions and how these elected officials will serve their communities. It’s clear that this county commission will be busy tackling many important issues that matter to the residents. As the saying goes, “stay tuned,” because there’s much more to come from our local government!
