In a recent political event, Mr. Doug Emhoff made clear his intent to show the more personal side of his wife and Vice President, Kamala Harris. Speaking at the Democratic National Convention, Emhoff painted a vibrant picture of Harris as not just a vice president, but a person driven by her innate empathy.
“She stands up to bullies, just like my parents taught me to. She likes to see people do well but hates when they’re treated unfairly. She believes this work requires a basic curiosity and just how people are doing,” Emhoff expressed to the audience. “Her empathy is her strength.”
Emhoff, having been married to Harris for a decade, mentioned that their forthcoming anniversary coincided with the day when the Vice president would formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for president.
Extending his speech, he spoke about his work in public service, specifically his efforts in combating antisemitism, a cause that Harris urged him to take up. “Kamala has fought against antisemitism and all forms of hate her whole career. She’s the one who encouraged me, as second gentleman, to take up that fight, which is so personal to me,” Emhoff stated.
In addition to talking about their shared commitment to public service, Emhoff also revealed more private aspects of their life together. Speaking about his faith, he acknowledged, “over the past decade, Kamala has connected me more deeply to my faith, even though it’s not the same as hers.”
Emhoff made a note of thanking his family members, including his former wife and his children. He added that his daughter, Ella, referred to them as a “three-headed parenting machine”. Embodying a modern, blended family, he expressed gratitude to his family and Vice President for the love and support they have given over time.
Before his speech, red colored ‘Doug’ signs were handed out to the convention attendees. These signs were prominently displayed in the VIP box with the second gentleman’s family, showcasing strong support for him and his endeavors. His speech emphasized the importance of empathy and the human side of political figures, reminding the audience that beyond their roles, they remain individuals, bound by values, beliefs, and influences.
Emhoff’s speech successfully addressed the personal side of the Vice President Kamala Harris and revealed more about her empathy and passion for justice. It also generously gave an insight to their shared commitment towards public service, creating an engaging framework of realism and empathy around the woman who is currently one of the most influential political figures in the country. The humanization of these public figures serves as a crucial reminder of their shared values and experiences.
