A prominent egg brand, Milo’s Poultry Farms, has announced an expansive recall of two of its egg brands following an outbreak of salmonella that has affected dozens of consumers across nine states. At present, reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that at least 65 people have fallen ill, with 24 requiring hospitalization. However, no deaths have been reported.
Wisconsin-based Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC has initiated the recall of all eggs under the “Milo’s Poultry Farms” and “Tony’s Fresh Market” brands. The recall also extends to all eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC purchased for retail food service distribution. Notably affected are the cartons labeled with these brands, regardless of the expiry date.
The affected eggs were distributed to stores and restaurants in three states, including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Despite this narrow distribution range, consumers from nine states in total have been affected by the outbreak, extending as far as Virginia, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado, Utah and California.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed the company that environmental samples from their farms had tested positive for salmonella bacteria. Further FDA testing confirmed the links between the sampled bacteria and the ongoing salmonella outbreak under investigation. As a precautionary measure, the CDC is encouraging consumers to dispose of or return any eggs under the affected brands, while also ensuring thorough cleaning of all items and surfaces potentially contaminated by the recalled eggs.
Milo’s Poultry Farms, an Amish family-run business, has declared a temporary halt to production and distribution efforts while sanitation tests are conducted on their farms and processing equipment. Any consumers with questions or concerns can reach out to the company directly for assistance. Meanwhile, the CDC urges the public to remain vigilant about their food sources and to report any related health concerns promptly.
