When Vice-President Kamala Harris was named the Democratic nominee for president, her husband Doug Emhoff found himself thrust into the limelight unexpectedly. However, as he has lived through his wife’s political career, stepping up into the public eye was nothing new for him.
Aged 59, Doug Emhoff was born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. He spent his youth in New Jersey before making a successful career as an entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles. After thirty years in this role, Emhoff stepped back from his career to support his wife’s political journey.
Emhoff’s life turned a corner when he was set up on a blind date with Kamala Harris in 2013. The couple hit it off and got married less than a year later. Their ceremony beautifully honoured Emhoff’s Jewish faith and Harris’s Indian heritage. He became a stepfather to his wife’s children from a previous marriage, Cole and Ella, and he carries their initials tattooed on his wrist as a constant reminder of family.
As Vice-President, Kamala Harris has made history not once but twice – first as the first black and South Asian woman to hold the position, and then as the proposed Democratic presidential nominee. With her ascension, Emhoff has also found his own place in the pages of history – as America’s first ‘Second Gentleman’.
This position has seen Emhoff leaving his successful legal career to become a Georgetown law professor, activist for reproductive rights, and a ceaseless champion in the fight against antisemitism. The latter role, in particular, has brought him much public recognition. In 2023, as the first Jewish spouse of an American Vice President, Emhoff travelled to the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp in Poland on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. He also stood up against antisemitism during protests over the Israel-Gaza conflict on American university campuses.
With Kamala Harris named as the Democratic presidential nominee, Emhoff has had to balance his roles as a supportive husband, professor, and public figure with additional responsibilities. He has been seen more on the campaign trail, speaking on behalf of his wife and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Emhoff also led a US delegation to the closing ceremonies of the Paris Olympics, a role typically filled by the First Lady.
Though being in the limelight has brought additional scrutiny, as allegations of an extramarital affair from his previous marriage have surfaced, Emhoff has addressed these with transparency and candor. Nonetheless, he remains consistent in his roles, ready to face challenges head-on, representing a symbol of steadfastness amidst the whirlwind political landscape.
As his wife’s political career continues to evolve, Emhoff’s role within the administration continues to expand too. His experiences and the challenges he has faced provide a fresh perspective, shaping a narrative of resilience and commitment. As the possibility of being America’s ‘First Gentleman’ looms, the world watches with curious anticipation to see how Doug Emhoff will continue to pave his way on this unprecedented journey.
