PONTIAC, Mich. – What started as a friendly dice game turned into a tragic scene that left two men dead and a community in disbelief. On the morning of October 8, 2024, a dispute over a mere $80 escalated into a violent encounter that shocked many in this quiet neighborhood.
Just after 8:00 a.m., law enforcement in Pontiac received a flurry of frantic calls from residents who reported hearing gunshots in the vicinity of North Sanford Street, close to Fiddis Avenue. What had begun as a fun gathering soon spiraled into chaos as emotions ran high, and tempers flared. Witnesses later revealed that it was all about some dice and a poor roll.
According to the police, a 32-year-old man from Detroit lost the game and subsequently lost his temper. In a fit of rage, he fired shots at two other men, leaving them with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office quickly arrived at the scene, only to discover that a 20-year-old man from Highland Park had already succumbed to his injuries. Tragically, a 24-year-old man from Pontiac was rushed to a hospital but later died from his wounds.
In a rather unusual twist, investigators believe that the shooter attempted to use a potato in a feeble attempt to muffle the sound of gunfire. Yes, a potato! This odd detail emerged from the evidence collected at the scene. Although the shooter might have thought this was clever, witnesses clearly heard the gunshots and quickly alerted authorities, ensuring that help was on the way.
After the shooting, police say the suspect ordered an Uber, departing the apartment and heading towards South Boulevard. However, his getaway was short-lived. When authorities tried to track the vehicle, the man managed to slip away on foot near South Boulevard and Woodward Avenue.
After hours of searching, police finally caught a break. At around 8:19 p.m. on the same day, officers spotted the suspect casually walking along the sidewalk of 8 Mile Road, bags of groceries in hand and a case of beer tucked under his arm. Talk about a brazen move! It’s hard to believe someone could act so nonchalantly after being involved in such a serious crime.
As the investigation continues, the Oakland County Sheriff, Michael Bouchard, expressed his pride in the collaborative efforts of the law enforcement teams involved. “I am super proud of our substation, all our detectives, and our partners for the effort that brought this cold-blooded killer into custody within 12 hours,” he stated. “I have been in this a long time, but it is still shocking to see the lack of value some people place on a human life.” His commitment is clear, looking forward to justice for the victims and their families.
As it stands, the suspected shooter is now in custody at the Oakland County Jail, and the case is poised to move to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office very soon. This tragic incident serves as a chilling reminder of how quickly a seemingly trivial situation can escalate into something much more serious.
Pontiac residents are left grappling with the shock of this event, hoping for peace and healing in the community. The families of the victims now face an unimaginable loss, while the suspect will have to answer for a crime that could have been avoided.
In the face of such violence, it is vital for communities to come together, reflect on the value of human life, and strive to find peaceful solutions in the face of disagreements. Let’s hope lessons are learned from this and that we can prevent such tragedies in the future.
