Celebrating 101 Years of Community Spirit at The Community House in Birmingham

Celebrating a Century of Community Spirit in Birmingham

In the heart of Birmingham, a remarkable institution is marking over a century of enriching lives and serving the community. For 101 years, The Community House has been a beloved gathering place for residents, and it still stands tall as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Its current president and CEO, William Seklar, has been a part of this journey for nearly 40 years, sharing his personal connection to this cherished establishment.

A History Rooted in Change

Back in the early 1920s, Birmingham was starting to grow as the impact of World War I came to an end. Understanding the shifting needs of the community at that time, the founders of The Community House envisioned a space that would bring people together. As Seklar reminisces, “I came as a boy with my sisters. Then, over the years, I got married, stayed in the area, and brought my children here.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of what The Community House has become—a home away from home for families and individuals alike.

From the Great Depression to Today’s Challenges

The Community House has always evolved to meet the needs of the community it serves. During tough times like the Great Depression, they rolled up their sleeves to help members find jobs and manage their finances. Fast forward to World War II, and the space transformed into a place for soldiers to receive care for their wounds. The 1950s saw an increase in women entering the workforce, which called for personal child care solutions that The Community House provided.

In light of the ongoing challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the early childhood care center at The Community House played an essential role by offering services to the children of essential workers. This flexibility and commitment to the community demonstrate that The Community House remains as relevant now as it was a century ago.

Revival After the Pandemic

As the community continues to recover from the pandemic, The Community House is excited to announce the return of 68 classes this September— a major step forward after having paused all educational offerings since March 2020. Seklar notes, “We used to have 900 classes, so you can see we’ve got a ways to go. But 68 to us is joyful after climbing out of COVID.” These classes cover a variety of interests, from fitness to music and language, proving there’s something for everyone.

A Place for Celebrations

Today, The Community House is not just a hub for classes and programs; it also serves as a venue for life’s important moments. Residents from Birmingham and 220 surrounding communities come together to celebrate weddings, corporate events, and various gatherings. The warm atmosphere and shared history within the walls of this institution create a unique backdrop for any occasion.

How to Get Involved

The Community House is continually looking for ways to improve and expand its offerings, inviting everyone to join in their journey. If you’re looking to make a difference, consider contributing your time or funds to help support the programs that make this place so special. A Future Full of Possibilities

As we look ahead, it’s clear that The Community House will continue to play a vital role in the fabric of Birmingham’s community life. With a mission focused on enriching the lives of those around them and a history steeped in service and support, there’s no doubt this cherished institution will remain a cornerstone of the community for many more years to come. Here’s to celebrating a century of togetherness and all the bright moments yet to come!
